Play one of the Bravely Default or Octopath games. Did you like it? Then try playing FFV, FFVI, or FFVII (emulate the originals and ignore any ports of remakes).

You have to understand that there is no 'typical' Final Fantasy game. There are very heavy design differences between every mainline entry, especially once hardware got to the PS1 level. This means that there's a lot of creativity on display, but it also means that the fanbase is very hetergeneous in their tastes and talking about which ones are best/worst is always a tiresome shitfight.
So just try a bunch of different ones. Also try out Tactics and Dissidia.

how are the pixel remasters? i never played 1-5, are pixel remasters good enough to experience them? i think i heard something about bonus content that was introduced to those games in other ports is missing from the pixel remasters for some reason? seems like kind of a mess to sift through

I did this about 2 weeks ago.
I played through the first 4 remasters. Taking a break and then I'll go back and do 5 and 6.
So far I think it's
IV > III > I > II

Get lost in XI for a bit. Private server or retail, you'll have fun for a month or two.

The first one you play will become your favorite so FF7. Good starting points are FF4, FF6 or FF7.

FF4 is very average nowadays but it's the first time the series goes with personalized characters, story and world. No customization apart equipment.

FF5 has the most customization but story and characters are bit lighter side. The game has more replayability than 4 or 6.

6 has large cast, good story but less customization. Good but bit boring on replays.

7 is best. End of story. You are expected to play it. The sooner you do it, thr better.

8 is bit disappointing after 7. Still good game. My friend started with 8, refuses to go older FFs and considers 8 thr best. It's fast and easy to pick for replay.

FF9 is slow. Good characters and story but less customization and so so slow.

FF10 is great but voice acting and hallway dungeons are first symptoms of nu-FF. Lots to customize

I remember there's like 3 main characters of your party and guest member for specific plot points until in the late of the game when the fourth of the original crew joins back to your party. At the start of the game your main party is escaping the imperial troops and the fourth guy gets left behind.

The system is that you can do anything with everyone but more they do it, the better they get at it. One way to meta game is to spend random battles hitting your own characters to build up their HP and weapon and spell skills. The spells level to level 16 and unless they are very high for the particular part, they are very unreliable and weak.

Good fresh ideas and attempts, bad execution

Start with IV - VI, then VII - IX. I - III are optional if you enjoyed the others. XII, the XIII trilogy and XV are polarizing, you have to see for yourself.

Ignore the trannies telling you to play XI or XIV.

6, 7 and X are often considered the most popular titles. Of these I think X would be the best starting point. Since it actually breaks away from some traditions that came before it it might be a good idea to do it first before you potentially see those traditions as a necessity for the series. Funny enough the game's story is about breaking away from tradition.

The first three aren't bad but I would only recommend them if you're really into old jrpgs.
4, 5 and 6 are pretty good.
7, 8 and 9 are the best in the series. I'd say start with 7.
Haven't played 10 and everything after looks like a steady decline until the series becomes actual shit. FF7 Remake looks like it's shit too.

Not always a good indicator. Sometimes old devs don't see their games the way fans do. Where we see something good, they see something they only did due to restrictions, not realizing the restriction made it better.

Start with 7, not the remake, the original.
That got the train going for everyone.

10 is the other modern FF that's in the "best game ever" category. There hasn't been a good Final Fantasy since 10.

Then if you're ok with classic 2D pixel games: 6 is also top.

It's ok to skip the others.
