Does it earn that title if most people simply ignore it? BotW/TotK get way more friction and debate.

Zelda II isn't really that divisive. Most people don't care about it, there are only a handful of people who have a strong opinion about it either way. The most divisive Zelda game would probably be Skyward Sword.

FF has a few divisive ones. There's obviously picrel, but pretty much every game released after X gets people arguing to some extent.

Zelda 2 is easily on par with the 1st and 2nd Castlevania games, it's only "divisive" among actual Zelda autists who don't play other games. Even the AVGN video people cite says the game is a good but difficult game, which it is.

I played it a few months ago for platinum points and it was a really interesting game. Link restoring his health by banging villagers is funny and the way the shield works is neat and quite intuitive when you get used to it
It was really hard though and I ended up getting frustrated and then abusing save states to beat it

Zelda II is the best Zelda game made before Twilight Princess.
