Politicians support it because they know that videogames is one of safety valves that prevents potential rebellion of young people. They know if videogame publishers go too far with their greed they can push away a lot of people from videogames and if they are not distracted with videogames they might start doing actions aganist goverment.

Any sensible legislation the EU market does is a positive soft power move. Then, on the flipside, EU countries already use video games as an avenue of talking to dissidents in foreign countries.
