And there was no "scouring" because the best results were the ones on the top

This was the greatest mystery of my childhood. I spent countless hours pecking out "cheats" into the sandcastle, trying everything I could think of, and none of it worked.

I remember it took a full day and a half for Deltarune Ch2's Snowgrave route to get datamined.
And even then it took people almost another day to finally believe it wasn't a hoax.
That brief period was the closest I've gotten to the pre-internet days, it even felt like a schoolyard rumor. The /vg/ thread was wild back then.

Unironically the last time I was able to truly play a game with zero access to answers or information was when Breath of the Wild leaked weeks early on the Wii U, and it was such a great experience being able to converse with other people online trying to figure shit out whenever I came across something that stumped me. Information is just too easy to gain access to these days.

Just play less popular games.
If you really want the experience of scouting the net for info, I suggest playing some dubiously translated chinese rpg (for example: Xuan-Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains).
All the information is technically available somewhere, but you'll have to comb through mtl'd chinese forums to find it.

I find INTERLOPER to be a little mid, but I sure liked the kulcs episode even if it was mostly just random passcode guessing with a lengthy cooldown for half of it because it wasn't dataminable
Unfortunately it seems that because games use pre-built game engines nowadays, those are easily decompiled, which comes at a loss to the game's secrets. The only two good ways are either:
1: Build your own game engine (not much developers want to go through that, and if they're not careful it can be datamined anyways
2: Host your game online on something like Roblox, which is now subjected to that you can't play it offline and if your internet farts you'll lose all progress (plus it's more annoying for games that are singleplayer in the first place)
It sucks, but times are a changing I guess.

>scouring the internet
for whatever reason, I didn't realize you could google things until the late 2010s when I finally got my own computer.
As a kid, I just kept replaying this game, and spent hours doing random shit hoping something would trigger and let me get the key, or into some other room.
In a way, I miss the tenacity and the creativity try to find those solutions. Now I google everything because its just way easier.
Another thing I used to hunt for was an Ice-Tunic in LoZ OoT. as a kid, I was positive someone brought their game over once and I saw an ice looking Ice-Tunic, and a black tunic, on their file, and spent hours in the ice mini-dungeon trying to figure out what i needed to do. Mainly it was the room with big spinning ice blades, and another spot where Navi would fly to and turn green. It must have been a fever dream because there is no ice or black tunic.
