To be fair now a critical difference is how Big Boss and Solid Snake endured a life changing betrayal. Big Boss was betrayed by The Boss but he knew she was innocent. This woman who was like a mother to him was innocent and her reputation destroyed. This made Big Boss personally angry at his government.

Solid Snake on the other hand was trained by Big Boss in the early games when he was at the Foxhound unit but Big Boss never treated Solid Snake like family. In contrast, Snake knew there was a world outside the battlefield. Despite readily admitting that he only felt alive when he was fighting, he felt disgust towards this nature and refused to let it be an excuse to ruin the world. I believe what really draws people to Big Boss is his sheer autism. He was a simple, straightforward autist who never read a single book or watched any movies and didn't have any interest beyond A) being a soldier and B) his next meal. There's a sort of refreshing purity and innocence to his character in Snake Eater and I think people found that appealing. But when the complexities of reality smashed into him without mercy, he couldn't handle it and retreated into his shell. He longed for a world that made sense to him, one that wasn't bound by grays. Being a soldier was all he knew and the only thing he wanted to know, and he didn't care about anything else. This is what made him into the monster he became.

I think people sympathize with that aspect of his character. People who wish for a simpler world, who understand Big Boss's longing for a reality that was black and white. Big Boss is incapable of adapting to a world without war, so he sought to create a world of endless war so that he could have a place he could always belong.

There's a sad irony and hypocrisy in Big Boss and Kaz's worldviews. Big Boss was shaken by what happened to the Boss. He couldn't accept the idea that soldiers were mere pawns who fought and died for their country, only to be tossed aside when they no longer had a use. So he created a private army, who fought for the highest bidder. In MGSV, Kaz laments that PMCs fought and died for causes they didn't believe in, banners that weren't theirs. But, like, isn't that exactly what PMCs are supposed to do? MSF and Diamond Dogs were both mercenary organizations. They performed jobs and got paid for it.

The War Economy in MGS4 was exactly what Big Boss and Kaz sought to create. Big Boss only realized his mistake long after the damage had been done.

Raiden's character arc is completed in MGS2 when Rose asks him if it's a proposal and he tells her that it's for her ears only. He throws away the dogtags, lets go of his past and moves on to build a new life where he can pass on the joy of living to the next generation. That's one of the biggest messages in MGS2, it's what nearly the entire ending sequence is about, it's also what Snake talks about in his ending speech too. Everything Rising does is just a bastardization, continuing something that didn't need to happen. And I like Rising as a game in a lot of ways, I even think it does in general a good job at telling a Metal Gear story.

On paper, it's a heartwarming scene in which Raiden finally gains his agency, but the reality is that the final scene makes it more vague than anything as to whether what's really happening is real or not. Rose had no reason to be there. After all, she was allegedly being held hostage by the Patriots. It's a deliberately bizarre scene made to have the player question if Raiden truly achieved agency, or if he was just giving into the simulation.

In MGS1, there's a part where you're aiming the rocket launcher at Gray Fox who's holding back REX. If you try to shoot, Snake will reject your input, refusing to shoot his friend. This is the moment, the quantifiable instant in which Snake gains his own agency for the very first time, separating himself from the player. This moment doesn't exist in MGS2. Raiden throws away the dog tag, but it's a hollow gesture. There is absolutely no way to be certain if anything that happened within the context of the scene was "real".

I agree this interpretation could be true. The game does plenty to make you question the nature of playing a game. It's all a simulation is a well-established theory. I even agree with the artificiality, but that's also what lends credence to the emotions of the scene. These characters have been constructed and pulled through drama to maximize the value of this final message, which is that despite life's harshness, there's still plenty to live for. Especially for the next generation. I think it's elegant that you can also interpret it your way, fully using the context of the game, and I think your argument is supported, but even if that is the case, the emotional impact of the scene on its face remains and you could even say Raiden and Rose's relationship is a tool it uses to accomplish that.

PW doesn't portray him sympathetically. He's a broken man that happens to save the world mostly out of self-interest. The only reason he gets involved in all this stuff is The Boss AI, which even that is him doing it because he knows she wouldn't want all out nuclear war. Peace Walker Big Boss > Snake Eater Naked Snake

Naked Snake is a pretty boring character if you ask me, there really isn't too much there most of it is front loaded where they really hammer it into your skull that he loves the boss and has a complicated past with the boss but its all tell and no show. It's hard to think of strong character moments for naked snake in 3, he's really propped up by that ending which only has as much weight as it does because we know what came later.

In Peace Walker however he feels more like his own person and to me his first scene with Chico is more memorable than any one single scene Naked Snake shared with a character in 3.

Solid Snake got all the recessive genes. Liquid got all the dominant genes. But recessive or dominant genes aren't intrinsically good or bad. You'd prefer the gene to be recessive if it would have a poor effect, and dominant if it would have a good effect.
