>controllers were two button, then four button to keep it simple
>Pic related comes in, nobody has any problems with it at all and it's 10x better for fighting games
>Industry promptly ignored it and continues 4 button config but (due to gamers demanding higher complexity) now invent 4 shoulder buttons, pressure sensitivity, another two back butt buttons, and other wacky c-stick type bullshit instead.

Fucking stupid. Should've rolled with six button config ever since it first came out. GameCube controller with melee is the greatest controller config of all time but everything else is subhuman trash.

The Sidewinder also got a similar layout plus added more buttons.
The siderwinder controllers were neat but I have no idea what compelled MS to create The Duke but it had about as many front buttons.
That said the layout of the xbox 360 controller was the only thing that console did right since it accommodated everything but fighting games and FGC fags will use a stick anyways.
>muh blades
I liked the console update with the Avatar stuff because achievements now granted more stuff to show up something only Playstation Home did for a small period of time and then only Steam followed on through.
While the xbox avatar era lived very shortly it came around the time the xbox 360 was getting its second wind and before utterly collapsing.

Going back to Sega, the Sega Saturn controller is still GOATED.

Then again, you could potentially treat those additional two buttons as sort of start/select or such. You'd mainly use the four buttons, but for some lesser actions use those two.
Certainly would be easier to reach than the start/select on most modern controllers.

This was not an issue until late Gen 8 and then 9.
Now you can bet that your modern controller will be garbage in a couple of months.
I made a xbox controller out of spare parts I found and that shit works better than the PRO controller I bought from one of the best reviewed sellers online with official quality certs.

I could swear modern controllers are made to fail, the joy cons are absurdly shoddy.

This is what you usually do if you have a modern 6 button controller based off the Genesis or Saturn one, although the left most face buttons are closer to the start button than they are to the ones on the far right. You have a 4 button core and then for lesser actions you don't use as much and/or you won't need to use in frequent succession you use the two that are left, in conjunction with the L and R shoulder buttons. This gives you the equivalent of the 4 face buttons + 4 shoulder button standard. Reaching across for the two farthest face buttons isn't quite as easy as just switching your fingers over two extra shoulder buttons and it requires taking your thumb's attention away from the core 4 face buttons, but obviously most 2D games (including modern ones) don't require frequent use of all eight buttons.
That said, you could probably put your thumb over the middle face buttons (Y and B) and try to regularly alternate between all 6, but I think that gets awkward.

The layout of the 360 controller is ass. It's just a Dreamcast +1 analog stick.
People are jumping all over back buttons now because the 360 layout is so bad at using its face buttons.
>>715329432
Camera control with dual analog is actual shit and forces games to be significantly less complex.
If you want to do 3D games on controller and you don't have motion controls, then the camera should mostly handle itself outside of edge cases.
If you want to do 3D games with camera controls, then mouse and keyboard should be preferred to avoid limiting yourself.

actually controlls were 2 button (NES), then 3 button (Genesis), then 4+2 button (SNES), then 6 button (Genesis 6 button), then you had the PS1 with 4+4, then the Saturn with 6+2, then the N64 with 6+2(/3 if you count the less accessible shoulder button), and it only actually settled on 4 with the Dreamcast, where sega was being super retarded. Heck, even the gamecube and xbox deviated from the traditional diamond; GC used 4 but in an odd orientation, and xbox had 6 in an odd orientation. It only TRULY became 4+4 during the 7th gen.

It was adequate for most games, the xbox one controller was better because the awful cheap D-pad was fixed. The D-pad of the xbox 360 was hilariously terrible and this was at the time the xbox had the live arcade thing and the controller was not suitable for old games because of how much it sucked.

2 sticks are kind of garbage. Only being able to pan the camera around at fairly fixed speeds is limiting to your ability to interact with things and if movement is relative to the camera position, then it's even worse and also makes movement inaccurate and sluggish.
Unless you're playing a simple 3D platformer, 2 sticks just aren't enough.
>>715332947
Basically anything with hotkeys.
>>715333074
>It was adequate for most games
It was barely functional, because most games at the time were switching towards being goldfish attention span military shooters, bamham snap-to combat, etc. that practically played themselves. I wouldn't have even acquired a 360 controller if control rebinding on PC at the time hadn't been going to complete shit.

Anon I use an M30 (pic related) and for a lot of games, 4 buttons is the superior choice. It's angled right so you can use your thumb to press 2 buttons at once (A and X or B and Y). There is no good way to do this on these 6 button controllers because if the buttons were angled properly, these controllers would have to be unnecessarily "taller". It's even awkward to position the thumb horizontally so you can press a row of buttons. At some point I used to bind B/Y and C/Z so that those were the normal 4 face buttons, but that's not a good solution either. At least the good thing about this gamepad is the fact it has a decent d-pad and 4 shoulder buttons (so you can use what would be equivalent to R3 and L3).
The only place where I'd say makes a lot of sense to have 6 or more face buttons is an arcade stick.

Technically 8 buttons, if we're going to count the SNES as a "6-button controller" due to L & R. The PS had four face buttons and four triggers.
