Tbh it's not even designed for girls anymore. Erenville isn't nearly as liked as Graha or Emet or Estinien (in fact many female fans find him boring and his accent offputting), and the only "hot" male character in Dawntrail was a giant lizard with a mexican accent (but even then, just a small number of fangirls found him cool). In the past, players had Hilda and Estinien; Zenos and Lyse and Yugiri; Emet, Graha, and Ryne; Zenos, young Emet and young Hythlodaeus and Venat and Meteion and Hermes... Here there is nothing, no matter your tastes.

The FF16 story was a mess though.
The prologue/demo was a 10/10 setup, but then they just dropped the ball from there and the game got progressively worse.

even past enemies, side quest characters, and minor NPC were hot and/or cool in the past. see yotsuyu and fordola, lucia, the crazy girls from pandemonium, the twelve, all the hot and funny people from the class quests, the gathering/crafting ones included. there were tons of fanarts made about them because they left an impression on people. i didn't see the same with dawntrail, just some stuff with sphene are protagonist, but never on the same quantity and quality levels as other past characters.

The story in 16 was garbage. 90% of the time is spent talking about some armies moving around somewhere. Those armies are never shown and none of that shit ends up meaning anything. Remember that storyfags are a massive audience and probably the biggest reason why XIV got so much attention. Everybody was shilling the free trial which was essentially JUST for the story.
Then Dawntrail comes out and it goes from uneven anime slop and decent drama to what I'd have to present as some of the worst fiction I've ever experienced. It's beyond awful.

And then there's XVI which was just plain hackery. A good setup completely squandered and the whole thing feels like a budget indie title that ran out of money for gameplay with inexplicably incredible production value and graphical quality.
