I have never played a single FF game, but I bought this on sale, and ended up playing 3 hours straight. I understand that old fans didn't like this at all. So what's the consensus? Is it a more dumbed down game aimed at casuals concerning the franchise like me, or is it just a bad game? If I liked this, will I like FF 13 too (I remember seeing it everywhere back in the day)?

I've always been a fan of the general technomagick aesthetic, but turn-based JRPGs intimidated me, so I never gave FF a shot.

15 is good but it is very obvious they wanted to make a 200 hour game but then had to finish a 50 hour game. Whiplash pacing

I love FFXV it's great, not perfect of course, but it's great, I'd even say fantastic! The combat is really engaging, especially the boss fights.

Its good. The main reason it gets some hate is because they totally went back on all the cool concepts they had from Verus XIII when they switched to XV

Also they were forced to cut too much of Luna's content. Some important story beats didn't even get real cutscenes. Shit felt unfinished.

it's a stitched together and rushed job
the original director was kicked off the game
the original name was changed
the original story concepts were scrapped and partially repurposed
the combat system was changed completly between early trailers, demos and final release
half of the DLCs were cancelled
half of the story is only available in content outside of the game like a movie, anime and novel

as a result, what you are a left with is a janky unfinished mess of a game. parts of it are good yeah, but it's not what it was intended to be.
the game also received big updates after launch, the ending section was changed, the story had movie scenes inserted that were never meant to be there, etc.

then you have more minor issues like the balance being pretty shit, it's almost impossible to game over in this game due to items.
crashing the car and dying that way is significantly more dangerous than every enemy in the game.
the combat, while flashy, and fun at times, is pretty jank still as it was rushed during the game's launch delay.
the original super boss of the game is embarassingly bad.

the fishing was fun, the bros were cool, the music is good, there is good stuff here.
but unless you are a tourist, it's almost impossible to ignore the issues.

Just how disjointed/shitty is the story?

Introduction to the game is split between a movie and an anime. Some of the scenes from the movie were patched into the game.

Each of the three friends bugger off for a bit, then you pay extra for the DLC that fills those sections of the story.

The antagonist's entire backstory is explained in additional DLC which also fleshes out the true antagonist that you never get to deal with.

Rest of the DLC were canceled and you need to buy a novel to read what happened.

Main story has a time skip that is fleshed out with the multiplayer expansion which is dead (and sadly has better combat than the main game).

Probably more too that I can't recall.
