Man, what a rushed, soulless, phoned-in, casualized game
>shit level design full of pointless empty space where there will be 30 doors, 25 just background textures, 4 lead to an empty room, and 1 is the critical path
>ridiculous amount of cutscenes/narrative sections constantly bogging down the action. You start skipping them and realize so many chapters have less than 30s of action
>bullet-time was completely broken and any semblance of balance was thrown straight out the window. It lasts 5x as long as the first game, makes Max move at superhuman speed, gives instant reloads (complete with a pointless gay ballerina twirl), and regens to full in just a few seconds
>unsurprisingly, a way overtuned bullet-time system and enemies that die way quicker than MP1 makes the combat a complete pushover joke. There is one starting difficulty and you must do two full playthroughs to unlock the others despite them making minimal changes; even max difficulty is a total breeze
>To compensate for this non-existent challenge, the game doubles down on shitty platforming sections, fills rooms with explosives, and constantly has enemies that just poof into existence behind you from rooms you already cleared. The game is still very easy, but your few deaths will be to cheap gotcha bullshit rather than actual combat
>two enemy types the whole game copy-pasted hundreds of times
>motions blur effect looks fucking nauseatingly awful, and they base entire levels around it
>plot is literally just "the group from the first game is mad at you! they know where you are at all times and will just send an endless monster closet of copy-pasted goons everywhere you go!"
>Max simps for a generic whore who tried to kill him in the first game, to the point where he is reduced to a whimpering helpless puppy who can't shoot a few enemies without her help
>this corny ass story is told without a hint of irony or humor and they really fucking thought they told some emotional heart wrencher here

You're a bit harsh but you're not wrong. It's a boring sequel.
The only level I actually liked in the game that felt like it captured the vibe of the original was Max's apartment, I mostly replayed that level as a kid when playing this game.

Max Payne 3's gameplay, atmosphere, level design, and attention to detail are so far and away better than Max Payne 2's. It's actually much more of a spiritual successor to Max Payne 1, especially on Old-School difficulty. And it has the best implementation of difficulty where you can learn the ropes or enjoy the story on lower difficulty, modes but Old School and Hardcore are brutally hard, even far harder than MP1 DoA while never feeling unfair. The main issue is just the way the unskippable narrative sections/cutscenes are woven into the gameplay, but there are mods to fix that.

Max Payne 2 sold like shit, killed the franchise, and its entire contrived bullshit plot was basically retconned. It seems like Remedy and the general public just forgot Max Payne 2 existed, and that's probably for the best. Truly just a stinking turd of a game.

You are an unbelievably delusional jaded faggot. Max Payne's 3 gunplay and attention to detail are absolutely insane, and the game especially shines on repeat playthroughs as you master the mechanics.

It's best if you just look at as its own thing with just a very loose spiritual connection to the first game, because the gameplay style and narrative structure are very different.

Gameplay is always king over narrative, so Max Payne 3 prevails on that front alone, but even in terms of narrative, you can't really get any worse than Max Payne 2's utterly contrived, phoned-in, stale plotline completely devoid of personality, humor, or even a single likeable character.

Even if you don't care about the plot or the characters, just in gameplay alone, Max Payne 3 is easily among the absolute best of the shooter genre.

I was put off by the whole "fat, bald max in a Hawaiian shirt in Brazil" thing, it just seemed so, so different. So I was surprised by how much it felt like a Max Payne game.

>every weapon shoots the same if you just burst fire
They don't at all, and burst fire allows you to mitigate recoil which is a much bigger aspect in MP3 than it is in any of the others. In MP2 you use like two weapons the entire game and it just constantly feeds you ammo for those weapons so you never have to bother with any weaker weapons.

And it barely even matters what weapon you use in MP2, because you have 15 seconds of bullet time per encounter combined with enemies that die in like 2-3 body shots so you can just spam bullet-time, spray in their general direction, and they are dead before they can react

>every version of enemy dies if you just shoot them in the head twice.
which is how it should be... heavily armored enemies should be able to take multiple body shots, while a head shot will kill enemies instantly, unless they have head protection, in which case it's one bullet for head protection, one to kill them. This is by far the best way to do enemy damage, and a good balance between the tissue paper enemies of Max Payne 2 (again, not that it even matters with the retarded bullet-time that trivializes every encounter) and the bullet sponges of Max Payne 1 where you can shoot an enemy 5 times with a shotgun from close range and they are still standing

Even in Max Payne 1, it's really not difficult at all when you know the levels, and abuse corners/bullet-time. Max Payne 2 is an absolute joke in comparison. It's just so disappointing that they neutered the methodical approach of the first game in favor of just mindlessly running through rooms, pressing bullet-time whenever you see an enemy, and just instantly winning the gunfight because you can shoot 50 bullets in the time an enemy can shoot 1.

Max Payne 3 is by far the hardest (Hardcore, Old-School, and NYMH), and I've done that as well. NYMH requires you to beat the whole game on Hard without dying once btw, far harder than anything in Max Payne 1 or 2.

Yes, compared to Max Payne 2 where you just spam bullets in their general direction while in absurdly OP bullet time and they are dead as long as two bullets hit them.

Almost like one of these is way harder than the other and actually requires precision while also not having the massive handicap crutch of 15 secs of superhuman bullet-time per encounter

What's the point of being mad about a 22-year-old game? This is only 5 years less pathetic than still whining about Ocarina of Time being overrated.
Anyway, I thought Max Payne 2 was fun but the first one is still my favorite. Go figure, the first entry in a series is the best just like 99% of series, like wow no way. It's completely normal for a sequel to be artistically inferior (but also more profitable because name recognition means normies eat it up and the shareholders win at the expense of everyone else as usual).

Are you a complete fucking retard by chance?

And have you even played the games at all? Because if you did, you would know that everything but the max difficulty gives you unlimited spammable quick saves that you can abuse every two seconds. Even the most unskilled retarded gamer could beat these with quick save spam, and even the hardest difficulty still only limits your quick saves slightly, but still gives you well over a hundred over the course of the game

These are all positives though.

3 weapon limit is realistic and the attention to detail of Max holding and holstering different weapons is impressive. It also forces you to think about what weapon you want instead of just spamming the strongest weapon. MP3 also has way more weapons that are used in limited contexts which keeps things more fresh and varied. It really feels like Max must scrounge whatever weapons he can in that situation.

Cover existed in MP1 and MP2, it just involved standing/crouching like a beanpole nearby cover rather than actually hunkering down. It's absolutely not a cover shooter at all, and playing it like that will you get killed so fast on higher difficulties (much moreso than MP1 or MP2)

OTS is just way more intuitive and allows you to better 'slice the pie' around corners

This is why I can't take you jaded faggots seriously. You're just nostalgia high retards who love the casualized baby game just because it's what you played first.

Max Payne 1 was a vigilante comic book game. Max Payne 2 was supposed to be a film noir movie game
Max Payne 3 was Rockstar owned the IP so they made it about some fat drunk american ex-cop in Brazil. Sam Lake didn't write that, and used Alan Wake 1 as his vehicle to deliver his own ending to Max Payne. something about bleeding out from a gunshot wound or something like that I forgot.

this is beyond retarded. there is never any reason not to just pick up the fastest firing weapon in sight. you get point and click headshots like in red dead so range and calibre never factor into it. the game doesn't give you options, period. your 'limited contexts' just means the game gives you exactly one grenade launcher in the entire story which you're expected to just shoot dry and then swap out for another assault rifle. there's a hundred spots that would've been interesting to snipe but you can't because the only sniper rifle in sao paulo is in the top floor of that shitty building so you can snipe those specific 10 guys and then the game takes it away from you forever. it's the most dogshit weapon system a retard could conceive and only a complete moron would think of it as 'variety'. it's anti-variety and anti-tactical.

That applies way more to MP1 where shots stagger enemies and MP2 where enemies die in 2-3 shots to any weapon. Especially since both games have a complete over abundance of ammo so you can stick to 1-2 guns the whole game

MP3 weapons have different range, damage, recoil, rate of fire, spread, area of effect, long guns take two side arm slots, and you constantly have to scrounge for ammo so you can't just stick to one gun, you grab what's around.

Two headshots per enemy is not easy when you have aroom full of flanking enemies. It's obvious you haven't played the harder settings
