Outer Wilds is great for exploration and mystery but it lacks characters and action, so depends if you want that
Anonymous No.715364787 [Report]
Etrian Odyssey games, but with a lot less body horror, and actually you can come back to town any time you have the chance.
Fear and Hunger 1, but its a lot less cute looking at, its even more hyperhostile, and everything its less interacting with the Dungeons themselves and more like interacting with the gods to get interesting shit.
After that, maybe the Made in Abyss game, but despite having plenty of soul in it is a shovelware of a mess. The cutscenes and voice acting, and some interactions are amazing, but unfor it feels like it needed a lot more polish.

I'll throw the first Subnautica game into the mix. Before you realize the leviathans are toothless and basically will never kill you it feels just as hostile, and the fact there is no in game map makes exploration and discovery the main draw of the world.

The Forest (and maybe Sons of, haven't finished it yet) is another one with a hostile world. Less interesting to explore, even though exploration is really important as well.

Trying to decide how much work I should put into this concept, and you guys are probably the best people to ask:

TTRPG game, maybe make it vidya if I can ever find enough motivation to learn how.
The concept is a rip off of MiA. Players would be "foreign sanctioned delvers". People working for foreign governments, given special permission to delve in the Abyss for artifacts to send home. Players would largely be scummy criminals and expendables, since no one wants to send proper people into the murder hole. Players have an artifact quota they need to meet or their license is revoked (read: they're either abandoned on the island or just killed). Oorth also gets first dibs on artifacts they bring up. But the players also need some artifacts to make delving easier. Having to balance those three competing interests to get deeper into the hole to make ends meet. Maybe they lie to Oorth or their government handlers about what they brought up. Maybe they find something truly spectacular and try and smuggle it off the island and home to show all those assholes who's boss. All while also trying to survive the murder hole and its wildlife (I have a great concept for a terrestrial bobbit worm hiding in a rock formation encounter).

Would you play this?

The idea is more like Reccetear. Where you often want to discount good items to the adventurers so they can clear better dungeons for you.
Its about forcing the players to have to make choices about what to keep, what to give up to the quota and adding an element of subterfuge as you try and keep your best stuff from being sold off or shipped back to the motherland. I might scrap Oorth's cut if it was vidya though, too many moving parts. But in a TTRPG where lying and concealment is more freeform it would be easier to keep.

I just don't see how Cave Story is in any way similar to it. As for Hollow Knight, partially yes and no. Delving into the mines, caves and the abyss evokes a similar feeling but the rest pf the game just isn't there. I would also add Ender Lillies' Verboten Domain into this category.
I would still say S.T.A.L.K.E.R. gives off the closest feeling to what MiA game should be, despite having next to no verticality.

if you've played nethack, it's very similar, but it starts on a fixed overworld map, and you can visit towns & go into different side dungeons.
there's an increasing background radiation that gets stronger the deeper you go, and it also gets stronger over time. getting corrupted mutates you in various ways, eventually leading to death.

the past 2 days I binged and read all of made in abyss out so far
I have lore questions for people more familiar with the series
-I'm kind of confused by the curse. It gets I guess clarified later but it feels a bit different than how it was portrayed earlier in the series. Do you get afflicted with the curse any time you move a certain amount vertically or only in certain points in the abyss? It seems like any real verticality fucks you up but earlier in the series we only really saw people get nauseous and shit when they were ascending like OUT of the abyss as opposed to constant nausea the entire climb out
-Do all people who "lose their humanity" due to the curse of the abyss become blobs and only people who receive the blessing become narehate? Or can you retain your higher facilities on your own ad just have to be lucky?
-Is Riko considered a full on white whistle now that she has one? It might be a silly question but I saw it as more of a promotion for people who are really skilled as opposed to literally just owning a white whistle? Because frankly she's just been hard carried by Reg and that doesn't seem fair
also as an aside everything that happened with Prushka and Faputa/her mom was fucking ROUGH. That is legitimately some of the most tragic shit I've ever seen.

Ah yes, I love 5 minute intros
I love being forced into tedious pseudo-cinematics interrupting my game
I love holding forward while the camera pans around in some epic way like I haven't been here a dozen times already wasting 10 more minutes of my time

It's like someone took the tedium of going through the depths in rainworld more than once to ascend all other cats and made it the entire game.
Oh well, if nothing else at least the intro being 5 minutes of just staring at a camera slowly pan into a ship at sea is sincere about what the game is like.

- Nanachi explained the curse, speedreader-kun. It's basically like layers upon layers of invisible mist (some people like Nanachi can see/sense it) and in some parts of the abyss these layers are thinner or have holes in them that you can pass through safely.
- Most become blobs or die, but they don't all become invincible I-Have-No-Mouth-And-I-Must-Scream vegetables like Mitty. You can also become a narehate via other means, like most of the original inhabitants of the narehate village.
- Riko has a white whistle so she is a white whistle. But it's not like anyone outside the abyss will know about it given how deep they are, unless bondaddy went back to the surface to gossip.

I know how the curse is layered, I must not have explained my question well.
What I mean is that going up and down in the first layer was seen as pretty normal and we didn't get basically any shows of any of the red whistle being nauseous unless they were directly leaving the abyss where as in the deeper layers they show that you're basically fucked if you have to climb a particularly steep hill. Is the first layer just so insanely thin and full of holes that you can reasonable do whatever you want there? I guess it'd make sense as the first layer but it just had me confused for a decent portion of the manga, since for the first couple layers I had assumed they were mostly fine unless they hit particular, like, boundaries.
And yeah, I know Mitty is only immortal because of the blessing, and that there are narehate that exist without getting the blessing, but I'm asking is it possible for just 1 person without the blessing of the abyss to get inflicted with the curse and not completely blob out or just die? Like in the illustration of the effect of the curse at the beginning of the manga just shows some dude getting like fins on his head and moving on, is that something that is actually possible or without the blessing you just turn into a gross mess and/or die

Its right in the first explanation of the abyss.
Each layer down gets progressively more taxing to ascend for any amount of time.
The first is just nausea, which is why they send kids into it to fuck around.
By the time they're in the cups of giants its bleeding from all orifices. Which is why it was so risky for Reg to ascend after Riko got poisoned by the porcupine.
BoneDaddy's layer shouldn't have been survivable, and after that any ascension starts turning you into a lump.

There is a bit of wiggle room, between Nanachi's senses and just going really slow it seems like you can manage little hills and quirks of terrain. But just a flight of stairs is otherwise enough to activate the curse. There's a full panel explaining it somewhere.

The white whistle thing is a bit of a subversion.
Initially the whistles are framed as nothing but a rank thing given as nothing but a status symbol to reflect your prestige. But the true nature of the white whistle shows how the relation is actually inversed. With the context of how they are obtained, naturally only the most experienced and wicked explorers would get their hands on one. This is also the shock moment that makes Riko see her mother in a different light for a moment since it became clear to her that even she had to go through the process despite seeming "good hearted" unlike Ozen or Bondrewd.

Found a game about delving and you have to do it with little to no visibility, the community is on each other's throat on not blatantly spoonfeeding anyone. The dev quit though so it's an abandoned game.
Yes i was talking about roblox map.
