Keyboard thread.
Talk about gaming keyboards.
I'm eyeing pic related to replace my Vulcan 120 AIMO. Any opinions?

The GOAT.
>>715368831>literally the worst thing that's ever been created
>>715368770 (OP)I have one of those, it's very nice. Highly recommend.
I got a mecha membrane keyboard and its exactly the same as a mechanical one, cost โฌ20. I wonder how much things people spend money on are memes. 1440p, 4k, mechanical keyboards, etc
they're all memes
>>715368770 (OP)I use Varmilo VA 108. It just werks.
>>715369108Yeah, it's not the best value, but you pretty much require it for fighting games (which is why I bought it in the first place) or platformers.
>>715369092Also I kept pressing the G5 key by accident trying to press left control, so I recommend clearing out all the presets in the G keys first to prevent fuckery if you're like me.
>>715369108> they're all memesDoes being a meme impact the quality in any way?
a โmecha mechanical โ isnโt the same in any real sense. It just bears a similar aesthetic and maybe has some sound you like or something. But it probably doesnโt really matter to you anyway
>>715369108Doubt.
My friend had SteelSeries Apex 5 Hybrid and it was the worst keyboard I ever used.
Mecha membrane are the true meme.
>>715368770 (OP)I've had sidewinder x4 for a long time now. maybe even 2 decades.
>>715369280This right here is my only con against the keyboard. I ended up applying some textured washi tape on the g keys, so I stop hitting it on accident.
>>715368770 (OP)>Cherry MX Board 3.0SGot this one from my dad two or three years ago and I still love it
cheapest logitech wireless keyboard. i had to buy another one 3 years ago because the old one started to bow in the middle
>>715369092Tactile or clicky switches?
>>715368770 (OP)Nice thread
I'm looking for a new keyboard too.
What I want :
- Linear Switches (like Red)
- Numpad
- Durability
I already have a Logitech superlight 2 mouse, should I go with G915X Lightspeed?
I'm just wondering if Flat keycaps will be durable or not. Also, most Pros in e-sports seem to use regular keycap. Worst case scenario, I can still use that keyboard for Switch 2 or PS5 with Bluetooth/dongle.
Anyway, here what I hesitate to buy :
- Razer Huntsman Pro V3
- Logitech G915X Lightspeed
- Steelseries Apex 3 Pro
Any tips /v/ros?
>>715369845Clicky switches. It sounds like my mouse and doesn't bother me at all except when I'm trying to sleep and can hear my cat walking on my keyboard, so I just throw a blanket over my keyboard at night.
just bought this for the fresh tmr meme and i'm content
was expecting to miss the buttons going from 100% to 60% but with a bunch of fn key rebinds i don't even miss the buttons anymore
>>715368770 (OP)Why isn't there a full-size version of this keyboard without the G keys?
>>715369959yeah just spend $300 on a keyboard blank with the features you want (but you have to flash your own firmware) and another $50 on switches that you have to meticulously manually open one by one and lubricate them and then $100 on custom keycaps
>>715368770 (OP)I bought a chink full size keyboard with swappable red switches on aliexpress for 40 bucks. What would I gain from buying one of those ultra pro gaming keyboards that are in the hundreds?
I've been using a 10keyless keyboard and it's quite comfy. I do miss having the numpad sometimes when I have to enter in 2fa or something but most of the times, it's just wasted desktop space.
where can I buy individual colored keycaps?
is such a thing even possible?
>>715370962>What would I gain from buying one of those ultra pro gaming keyboards that are in the hundreds?nothing, its a weird hobby for autists
Been using this for almost 20 years. Good value
I just returned a Razer blackwidow v3 after failing after less than a year, ALT, Q F1 and Tab had all failed
The last one was a Roccat and it was great until the same thing, also the space bar was shitty
I want a decent full mechanical keyboard that has RGB for low light
>>715369215I have this exact same keyboard except for the numpad, can recommend.
>>715371426NOOO YOU HAVE TO USE A 100+$ MULTICOLORED MECHANICAL GAMING KEYBOARD WITH RGB YOU CANT DO THIS
>>715371426I am literally typing on the wireless one of these right now
based
>>715368770 (OP)Can't go wrong with good old Logitech
Are you sure you need a numpad?
Just received pic related and it being shorter feels nice
>>715371426this is so bad bro you have to spend โฌ500 on some gay rgb lights or your not a real gamer and you cannot post on /v/! get out!
>>715368831this but unironically
>connects instantly>light and sturdy aluminum frame>nearly infinite battery>chicklet minimal key travel
>>715372018>I only see in colorsliterally gay
>>715368770 (OP)Just build a custom mech keyboard. Gamershit ais always gaudy, cheap and overpriced. Get yourself something made of aluminum and steel.
let me guess, you need more?
I got this and then it went on sale for like $50 off the next day..

More Money Than Sense:
Model F or Beam Spring keyboard from New Model F, it is the only way you're going to get a vintage keyboard with N-key rollover
I Want A Metal Keyboard:
Keychron Q series keyboard of your preferred layout, Monsgeek M series keyboard of your preferred layout (Monsgeek is cheaper)
I Want A Plastic Keyboard:
FL Esports series keyboard of your preferred layout (CMK is their "deluxe" brand, most other naming schemes are similar to Leopold), 8bitdo mechanical keyboard of your choice in either full-size or TKL with optional numpad + calculator
I Want A Plastic Keyboard That Isn't Expensive:
CIY X77 (TKL), basically anything by Redragon
Best switches by type
>light linear
Dog shit switch type, reconsider your life
>medium/heavy linear
Gateron Oil Kings, Gateron Yellows
>light tactile
Kailh box brown v1
>medium/heavy tactile
Boba U4T, MMD Princess tactile, Chosfox Voyagers (Voyagers have clearance problems on taller keycaps like MT3)
>silent tactile
Boba U4
>light clicky
Kailh box white
>medium/heavy clicky
Gateron Melodics, Kailh box jade & navy
Best keycap profiles are MT3 (only buy on BOGO sales for best value and preferably buy the PBT sets like /dev/tty), Keychron KSA, and Akko ASA for shorter keycaps. Cherry/OEM profile is total fucking dog shit
ABS vs. PBT is purely up to preference, ABS feels more "hollow" and polishes from finger friction over time, but some people like this look and feel. "Doubleshot" means the piece of plastic is injected twice all throughout the keycap, if you cut a keycap in half you will see its legend distributed through the entire cap and the underside will have two-tone plastic from this second injection
Avoid any keyboard that doesn't list "hotswappable" or "hot swap" capability, these hotswaps are socketed ports on the PCB for switches to be easily taken in and out. There is no mechanical advantage to direct soldering switches in
Avoid "mechanical feeling" or "memchanical" keyboards like the fucking plague

Without irony.
>>715368770 (OP)best keyboard i ever bought. excellent switches, quiet, usb, volume, g keys, its perfect. IMPORTANT: get the fixed revision of the g815. the initial has 1 tiny flaw and thats the fact that the symbols on the number row are not lit. not a huge issue but nice to know
>>715368770 (OP)I feel like the people that swear by cheap memebrane keyboards are the type of people to eat boiled chicken, boiled broccoli and rice.
>>715373067They either don't know better or they're being heckin' memelords. I personally was in the "didn't know better" camp, similarly to thinking shitty dollar store earbuds were perfectly fine until I tried actual good ones.
I got myself one of those hall effect keyboards. I kinda like it as having a super sensitive profile for vidya is fun and then one I use for typing makes it practical. It doesn't take me from a chump to a champ in my use case but it does smooth out a few rough edges in some games so i'm happy,

Is there a Honda Civic of wireless mechanical keyboards? Been rockin' pic related for years now and am growing intolerant of its shit connectivity.

My beloved. Had this for nearly 10 years now.
>>715374785>Is there a Honda Civic of wireless mechanical keyboards?Any of them can be one if you puncture the battery
>>715374902just switched to a new keyboard and im dreading the potential filth and shit that will fall between the keys over time
how do you clean it?
>>715369605I have one in storage and the paint on the keys was worn off after 7-8 years of use
Yours must have no paint at all left
>>715374785Also check the 8bitdo mechanical keyboards because they have triple-mode wireless and aren't terribly expensive for what you get out of them
>>715371621>whoa I literally have the same mass-produced keyboard. what are the odds??
>>715375057since I started learning korean I got keyboard stickers with both letters to cover up the missing paint. still missing on some like alt and shift
>>715375054Just take all the keycaps out and wash them separately. While they're drying, blow out the majority of the grime with an electric duster instead of those shitty cans of compressed air. To get into the nooks and crannies, use a toothbrush or cotton swabs with isopropyl alcohol/whatever cleaner you have. Dry off the keys and then put them back on.
You do not need a numpad.
Using a numpad because people will be mean to you on /v/ is cuckold behavior.
You are paying more for less.
>>715374902I had to finally get rid of my G710+ after keys stopped working about a year ago. Opened it up and there was so much gross looking stuff. There was yellowish green gunk, which I can only imagine is years of skin oil that gradually corroded the PCB.
I took the keycaps off every few months and cleaned thoroughly, but I never thought to take it apart completely.
i have a gmmk pro with boba U4 and blank white XDA keycaps. and a murphpad external numpad
it's pretty damn comfy
>>715375205>learning koreanbased, good luck with it anon.

I use a Model F SSK for regular computer use, but for M+KB gaming, I tend to prefer my 8bitdo keyboard with Keychron Brown switches. In both cases I also have a Keychron Q0 Max numpad/macropad to the left.
>>715375613A PS2-themed edition would be awesome, especially as an indirect callback to the official keyboard that came with the hideously rare PS2 Linux kit.
>>715373067>healthy foods catching straysWTF? If someone is only eating boiled chicken, broccoli, and rice then they're probably jacked out of their minds. That diet fucking hard to maintain. If anything your analogy should be people eating only chicken tenders and pizza
speaking of keyboards, do any of you guys practice typing to try to increase your WPM? I've been doing it for 30 min a day for the past few years, I'm almost up to 130 wpm
>>715368770 (OP)I use the fuck cheapest most generic keyboard in existence, and it works perfectly, gayman keyboards are a meme.
>>715375560Highly recommend hunting down an FR4 switch plate for a GMMK Pro, it brings the keyboard back to life. I had the AVXWorks one but it seems they're out of business. https://us.computerorbit.com/products/custom-gmmk-pro-fr4-plate-ansi
Switches don't sound like they should and the keyboard feels oddly stiff with the metal and even polycarbonate plates Glorious provides.
>>715376090some other anon recommended that a while back, I've been meaning to get one but haven't gotten around to it
I'll do it at some point
>>715368770 (OP)Huntsman V3. At first I was weary about optical switches. But I really like this keyboard.
I have tried about every switch, I have tried ergo keyboards, I have spent hundreds of dollars on the hobby.
I still come back to the L100
>>715375872I hope on typeracer every once in a while.
>>715376296the L100 is a tried and true keyboard though, its timeless
>>715368770 (OP)bought this one awhile back, expensive (compared to what i had got in the past anyway) but have had no issues for at least 5 years, possibly more i cant remember how long. Only complaint is that it is annoying to clean since you have to take out all the keys but I guess that goes more most mechanical keyboards.
Best method I have found to clean these types is a wet paper towel wrapped around a toothpick and then just go through the insides with that
>>715376167Be aware that putting the light diffusers back in the side is a bit of a booger with a screwless plate like that. A clever Redditor from some years back says to put the diffusers back in their housing on the sides of the keyboard, put the plate on, then anchor the diffusers by putting the diffuser's screws into them through the top and through the FR4 plate's threadless screw holes.
Also be aware that if you don't assemble things right, your knob will feel like it's grinding when the board is back together and you try to use it.
>>715368831I have nothing against apple keyboards on a base level but just looking at it I feel like the dpad kinda sucks for gaming no?
>>715376362if you want to improve it's worth checking out type monkey, it will give you randomized words from a pool of the top 1000 english words. IMO it makes more sense to grind out heavily used words rather than wasting time with the random quotes that type racer uses since some of them have rather eclectic language that you will rarely see.
>>715375581It's hard probably because of all the concussions I've had.
>>715376604goes for* most
also dual molded keys so no worries about washing any of them with alcohol or whatever you wanna use
>>715376819I like the direct competitive nature of typeracer.
Redragon is a solid, cheap brand of keyboards.
>>715376819>rather than wasting time with the random quotes that type racer usesNot that guy, but I can get 190 wpm on type monkey because it's just random words and there's no sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation, etc. meanwhile on typeracer I get 150.
It's obvious why typeracer is objectively better, assuming that you actually want to learn how to properly write.
>>715375669Same. Built like a tank and it just worksโข.
>>715376908as someone who has been learning it for a long ass time... First, memorize the alphabet (really straightforward, should take a few hoursish). Then get a really straightforward beginner textbook, I used one that was called "integrated Korean," which has both text books and work books. I also used talk to me in korean which was a different text book series. During that you'll have to grind out some grammar and vocab, which will be super dry at first, but Korean is pretty straightforward in the early stages.
Once you knock out some low level text books, I recommend hiring an online language tutor (someone to just sit on discord with you and either answer questions, listen to your momentarily mangled korean, and speak to you in a simple enough but conversational manner) and or getting a korean GF to serve the same role. Then have a goal in mind, the easiest being to pass the first level of korean fluency exams. That will give you a big list of vocab and grammar to go after, and by the time you finish the first exam you should be pretty decent in basic conversation. Then you can either visit Korea or pursue harder fluency exams, or grind out more grammar/text books/vocab.
The tutor thing sounds dumb but I found it SO effective. I'm also still very close friends with my tutor, we even went to japan together.
>>715377103Mechanicals have hit kind of an apotheosis and there's not much practical difference between a $30 keyboard and a $100 one. If you have dielectric grease and packing foam or liquid silicone around you can also DIY all of the premium stuff that goes on with higher grade keyboards.

>>715375872typing of the dead
>>715377342I actually type faster on type racer because it's easier holding the words in my head since the sentence structure makes recall easier. That is, it's easier to remember "the dog jumped over the fence" rather than "jumped the over dog fence the," meaning I can read ahead further to plan
>>715377382based, you're the first that I have ever met that uses das. I use the really old model that doesn't have the media knob on the side because I was always bumping that shit with my mouse hand.
>>715370431is that Monsgeek?

>>715377935>no numpadhow the fuck do you do it
>>715377935>TopreHoly fuck that's a name I haven't heard in a while. I remember they were literally all the rage and now no one even talks about them anymore, pretty crazy.
>>715377540I'm grinding out grammar and vocab, but if I grind do hard my brain shuts off. It's a delicate balance. I also can't put too much time into it because of work and looking after alzheimers mom
>>715369215I really like the art on this one, are those custom keycaps?
>>715378097fair enough, you got this anon
>>715378095Exposure ended up forcing them back into the niche, basically. "Yup, they're rubber domes."
>>715368770 (OP)I got a G915X a few months ago, and the volume wheel is already almost unusable. It's completely random whether scrolling it up or down will increase or decrease volume, and sometimes the volume shoots up to 80% when I'm trying to go from 35% to 30%. Several keys have also started double typing sometimes, like I, A, S, and W (extremely annoying when II'm closing a browser tab). Logitech's quality control is just as bad with their keyboards as with their mice.
>>715378304do people actually use all of those extra buttons? I have never once touched them
>>715378043Most people dont need a num pad you dumb bitch
>>715378420>most people don't need to make a budgetyou're crazy anon

>>715378467>numbers are all ready on keyboard>most people are not brokers contrary to popular belief>the people buying this shit are already financially stableNo I think youre just retarded or autistic.
i went without a numpad briefly but went back because I like the option for roguelikes. don't care if i only play one once every 4 years, i can afford the desk space
>>715377769lmao I used to have that same issue before having to reposition my mouse pad. Annoying for sure, but I've been too spoiled with the knob to give it up now.
>>715378043I use the number across the top
Or if i really need one i'll buy/make a separate numpad
>>715378250Are they any better than cheaper dome keyboards?
I used to avoid using it for gayman but I've come to really like using just the left side + mouse
>>715379194Your only other real options for high quality rubber domes are NiZ keyboards and ABKO "capacitance" keyboards. ABKO is hard to get ahold of due to being a Korean brand.
>>715378467>using a desktop computer for budgetingWhy would I do that when I could have a spread sheet on my phone and update it every time I spend money?
Don't be retarded
>>715376714>the dpadThose are arrow keys used by nearly no games. And you can get a full size one if you want.
>>715378304I had a similar problem with a Razer keyboard circa 2019-2020 with the volume wheel (my issue was that it would sometimes turn into a scroll wheel). It's embarrassing just how badly custom and no-name chinesium boards have trounced the likes of Logitech and Razer on quality control (not to mention how many features you get for your money).
>>715369959EVGA Z15/Z20 with the silver Kaihl switches. Has numpad and its also hotswap in case you dont like the switches, it's also made with metal, lots of sissy keyboard reviewers complained about it but its really not that heavy and its rock solid.
Don't know if they are still being sold but they shouldn't be more than 70 bucks, I got mine for 55 on a sale. Just replace the caps with some pbt keycaps for maximum comfy.
>>715382036That particular keyboard is the bomb, specifically the two variants from EVGA. Zero latency, massiv key rollover, no stupid clicky noises (the linear switch, and all for a price of just $45. I believe the Z20 was $70.
>>715368770 (OP)Any keyboard with a numpad is not for gaming. They are not ergonomic. The exception is if the numpad is on the left. You sir are a fake gamer.
>>715368770 (OP)bought the picrel MSI Forge GK310 recently cause it let you take off the top plate and have "bezelless" look that I was thinking would be easier to clean, and it was hotswappable. it's also my first time using a linear switch (Outemu Reds) after using MX Browns for over a decade.
too bad the included switch puller can barely remove these switches and the included switches are wedged in there so tight they break upon removal. and I do want to remove them, I miss the feedback from my tactiles and bottoming out feels so hard and mushy...

Pretty happy with it overall, very good linear switches. You can probably make a premium feeling keyboard for far less nowadays I'm sure
>>715368831These are very nice. The newer rechargeable ones lay too flat. Apple fucks up everything, even the stuff they used to make well.

>>715386657maybe you should get a better job
>>715386759what computer jobs don't require periodically entering long strings of numbers for an hour? i have never encountered one
>>715384165There are plenty of games that can make use of the numpad and anyways, the inconvenience of not having a numpad for general use vastly outweighs the convenience of a slightly shorter keyboard.
>>715368770 (OP)I'm using the one in your pic and it's great, led isn't too overblown and being able to customize your own color schemes is nice.
The keyboard itself will "bend" over a long time for some reason though, but it's more of a visual thing instead of something that'll actually impact your usage of it if anything.

I've gotten so used to typing on laptops over the years that I can no longer endure typing with full-travel keys. It's short-travel or bust for me at this point.
>>715372592I will have to try MT3 someday. Did not like the KSA caps that came with my keychron q3 though, too tall I think? so I swapped them with cherry
>>715392196ergonomics and layout
there've been other keyboards fairly similar in concept over the years from big corpos
>>715392183>volume control. Shit should be mandatoryAgreed 100%.
>>715392361Q3s apparently ship with OSA keycaps, not KSA, but if either of those are too tall for you you will most certainly not like MT3 which are among the tallest keycap profiles in existence. Check Akko ASA keycaps, they are a more dramatically sculpted version of Cherry/OEM, essentially Cherry/OEM height coupled with a top "scoop" sculpting like KSA or MT3
>>715392412Ok... and what are the supposed advantages of these ergonomics and layout over a traditional keyboard?
>>715392750uhhhh comfort and not fucking your arms up? i'm not selling you on one or anything
>>715392750Ergonomics, also known as human factors or human factors engineering (HFE), is the application of psychological and physiological principles to the engineering and design of products, processes, and systems. Primary goals of human factors engineering are to reduce human error, increase productivity and system availability, and enhance safety, health and comfort with a specific focus on the interaction between the human and equipment.[1]
>>715392680Oh forgot to mention it was the max version which comes with KSAs. Maybe I wasn't a fan of the scoop thing either but will have to break them out again and see. I think it was just majorly throwing me off as a 150wpm typer, bumping and getting caught on edges maybe
>>715392881I've been using normal keyboards for over 20 years and my arms are fine. I also never had comfort issues. Anyways, I was just curious, is all.
>>715393323That explains it. Once I got accustomed to MT3 and KSA I found it very hard to go back to shorter keycaps, but it probably is just personal preference on my part. I definitely prefer sculpted profiles and I outright refuse to use Cherry or OEM with their comparatively weak sculpting, or uniform profiles like KDA.
>>715393583Until you use a split keyboard, you'll never know what you're missing.
NTA, but even having a split keyboard without the dactyl form factor is much nicer feeling.
>>715391897that's my keeb
what the other anons said, basically. Ergonomics.
It can be awkward at first (especially if you can't "touch type" so the split is weird, plus the keys are "columnar" instead of staggered), but it's a lot more comfy if you can manage to get used to it. I actually get 140WPM on monkey type with it now, which is faster than I am with a regular keyboard.
It's meant to match the natural curl of your fingers more. An easy to imagine difference might be hitting F4 or something. You're basically just pointing instead of moving all the way up there. Also notice the pinky columns are a lot more shallow.
Plus you have all those keys for your thumb instead of just spacebar. Which also ends up being pretty nice for gaming. I just adjust WASD over to ESDF
>>715393583yeah I've never had issues from typing either, but I also type for a living, so I like the idea of being preventative. Plus like
>>715394260 said it actually is nicer if you do get used to it.
I've seen enough programmers who are otherwise physically fit and exercise end up with permanent issues that I'd just rather not take the chance. It's one of those things where you don't have any issues and then you do and they don't go away. I think if you type a lot but it's just shitposting and whatnot it's not quite the same. There's a certain threshold where it can become an issue, even if you're physically fit. If you don't quite reach that threshold maybe it just never matters. Maybe for me it never would have mattered anyway. Ended up being better all around, though so it doesn't matter.
>>715370431I have the FUN60 Ultra too but I miss the buttons
>>715394701I tried using a split but couldn't gel with it. I ended up using an old sculpt that helped with work strain.
>>715397475If you can handle the split here what was so hard about the 'true' split? I'm guessing it was also columnar so the keys were shifted around a bit. I wonder if there are non-columnar split keyboards out there. I've never looked. I think if you ever wanted to give it another try, the main key is to take it really slow at first. Seems slow but you get back up to speed sooner than you might think, because you do already have the muscle memory, you just need to rewire it a bit. I think if you never take it really slow you just end up fumbling around making typos with old muscle memory forever.
>>715399097It's mostly that I like to re-adjust my keyboard positioning a lot throughout the day, so when I have two separate pieces my adjustments get uneven. The other real "split" I have is the voyager, which is admittedly a big departure.
>>715399097>I wonder if there are non-columnar split keyboards out there. There are a few. Kinesis makes one, and I've seen some on various mech keyboard sites.
