Why don't consoles get discounted anymore?

Literally every other gen for the past four decades was 50% off or more at this point in their lifespan

They sell the refurbished ones for lower cost, you don't get a brand new one on sale anymore.

Even back then: '$49.99' was not a 'discount', that was a literal: "this shit aint selling, time for a file sale' type of sale.

I remember when GameStop was trying to sell the last stock they had for GameCubes in like 2010 maybe 2011 and you could buy one for like 20 bucks. Crazy how much times have changed

The short answer is it doesn't cost less to manufacture. Previous gens there were a bunch of things that could happen:
>old node gets discounts
>die shrink processor and make 2x per wafer
>PCB simplification
>cooling cost reduction
The cost per wafer for 7nm has like a 10% reduction where old gens could have 50% by now. Die shrinks dont save any money because if the newer gens can make 2x more per wafer, they cost like 1.9x as much. The PCB released is already simplified and the cooling is as cheap as they can make it to start. They could save maybe $50 if they tried.

It may even cost more. The supply chain is still fucked up from COVID in weird ways.

I also chalk this up to why modern consoles are so shit and controllers are also shit in quality. It's crazy how most consoles in the PS2 generation and earlier still work meanwhile PS4 and PS5 have tons of performance issues and dozens of users guides to try and fix problems.

They seriously expect you to just go out and buy a new console every 3 or 4 years

>Why don't consoles get discounted anymore?
Because they keep selling like hot cakes or sell so few units they increase the price.
Back in the day these corporations ought to sell consoles so they could reap the 30% license fee on games, but now since they have so many paypigs paying up for shit like online and thousands mtx, they really don't need to sell consoles anymore, to then sell games.
Also, back in the gamecube era, people couldn't afford a 1000 euros console, while nowadays the western economy is better, so they think they can scam people for ever more expensive consoles and games, while they don't see they're quite literally killing their own business.

Every other gen actually felt like a huge step up in literally every other past decade other than the current one. Nowadays, having the old console means you'll just get an update to give it most of the features and even UI of the new console, and it even means you'll still be able to play a majority of newer games, just at a lower resolution and FPS.
Just look at any of the modern PS4/PS5 or Xbone/Series games that have two versions for each console - the "old" ones really usually look almost the same aside from minor things like shadows and meme tracing being turned down or off.

Consoles realized their consumers are retards and there's basically no competition left for playstation as a home console or the switch as a portable console. All the remaining dumbasses are stuck with it because they're too stupid to use a PC.
