The game will be defended to the death by people who would have loved it no matter what. All they want is more time with the characters. It doesn't matter if it's tedious, boring, nonsensical, badly written, insulting to your intelligence, utter trash. You could make a 100 hour game set in Seventh Heaven and they'd like it, because they get more time with the characters. At some point they became obsessed with the characters, but don't actually care about the story or the game they're in.

I will never tell you why I think Roche is good, that's a secret I'll take to the grave. But if you're going to say he's bad I'm going to ask you why as many times as it takes for you to realise how wrong you are.

I liked FF7 R but it fills me with existential dread in the sense that they can make a fun game but completely rely on old characters while creating new characters and new plot points that are just awful and completely forgettable to the point where I'd consider it even worse if I did accurately recall the ghosts interfering with the plot or the side characters that completely fell flat in being at all memorable or likeable.

It's exactly like a decent fanfic but as soon as the writer starts venturing into their original stuff they completely shit the bed creating an uneven experience where only the good stuff is remembered by anyone so everyone's just like

and then they fucking cringe when they're actually confronted with how it actually was.

What is a remake? the same game? an actual remake where things are different? keeping the same feelings as a replay? recreating the feelings of playing the original game for the first time? is that even possible?
People in general are so used to "just the same game" that this one just opened the discussion on how remake should be made, or if they should at all.
If you ask me, i think they just wanted to make you feel like you were playing FFVII for the first time again, something REALLY hard to do. But you can tell they were trying to make you feel like you are not sure what you are getting into. Sadly the fans dont like feeling this way, so it backfired somewhat.

What they should have done, after the ending of Remake, was an entirely new story. Entirely new, by scratch, in order to impress the player and leave him/her disoriented and so more interested to see what is going on next. In Remake they barely managed to do that. In Rebirth they fucked up everything big time, like people that has grown tired of what they're doing, for haven't their hearts on it anymore, and so they have to produce "something", just to say they have completed it.

I think most things are subjective and you can enjoy things because of reasons other people say they're bad.

My issue was that the difference between what was new and preestablished creates an uneven experience where if you're really cynical you could say they're basically wearing FF7 as a mask to hide from criticism when they know fans don't want to criticize the franchise, and if you're being generous you could say they're just 'experimenting' but that kind of falls apart when you look back at the history of FF as a franchise that's been incrementally experimenting and making bold choices since the beginning, where it wouldn't rely on old characters and always venturing out into new world with new characters.

IF they're going to treat FF7 like it's own franchise they should act like it's a franchise and create an even experience for it instead of doing whatever they want because we have a place for that and we've been doing that, it's called mainline final fantasy.

Kino Fantasy VII Kinomake.

They changed too much, and completely failed to capture the soul of the original.

Granted it’s still a good game/project so far. And change is good, not inherently bad at least, but if you change too much just for the sake of change it can become a negative thing. That’s what happened here, and I think a lot of fans are disappointed that they’re never going to get the real remake that they wanted for well over a decade, and will instead have to settle for this episodic thing that feels like more a of a sequel than anything else.
