There was a moment in Fear 2 where your possessed commanding officer just walks slowly across the screen while doing this ghostly moan. At that exact moment, my friend called me. This was like one in the morning. That was probably the last time I can remember clearly. I also remembered Condemned having some pretty fucking out there moments.

I've never been SCARED by anything from the Walten Files guy, but I do think that he's very good at making viscerally unappealing faces. If nothing else, analog horror has shown that it's very fucking hard to draw/paint a memorably fucked-up visage without falling flat on your face and ending up with a gag (see Jerma face Gabriel,) but he consistently puts out shit that's effectively repulsive to look at.

I doubt the average viewer will be jumping in their seat, but I do think that his stuff leans more towards disturbing/grossing out the viewer than it does outright scaring them, so the way he draws/renders shit like this does a lot of work in carrying the tone and memorability of his videos.

BEN and Tails Doll made me shit my pants as a kid, so I lean towards thinking most kids would be losing sleep at night if they stumbled upon any of this stuff, but kids these days consume this shit 24/7 so what do I know.

>Has a videogame ever scared you? If so, what is the specific moment and why?
Plenty of horror games have made me uneasy or startled.

But only two games ever made me genuinely terrified: Pathologic 1 and The Void.
In Pathologic 1, it was the fucking albino encounter on day... I think it's 5 of Bachelor's route? That shit gets to anyone who played Bachelor first, it's an absolute MASTERCLASS of fucking with the players mind.
It's all about the very, very slow build-up, about the way the game lulls you into a false sense of security over the course of like 7 hours. It's absolutely perfectly timed, hits you exactly at the moment when you become convinced that you got the handle on the story and figured out its approach to supernatural... and then this fucker appears and suddenly, literally everything were confident in is fucked again.

It's such an insanely effective scenario done with so very, very little resources.

The Void does something very similar with the first visit to the Surface, except the role of reality and strangeness are reversed. The game makes you very much confident that it's all abstract, all vague surrealism and some kind of very unclear allegory or metaphor and than it smacks you in the face with something so concrete, so obviously real, it again makes you question everything you thought you knew about the story, and that is PROFOUNDLY unsettling.

IPL really are fucking masters of their craft.
Also, Knock Knock never scared me, but it did give me a panic attack.

the flying polyps fight at the end of call of cthulhu: dark corners of the earth REALLY fucked with me in a way I've never felt from any other horror game

something about them just suddenly appearing hovering in the void staring at you set off a primal fear I have about seeing something in an abyss/body of water just watching you, I was breathing heavy basically the whole fight

then I softlocked on the last puzzle of the game because it's a buggy piece of shit lmao

When I was a kid, silent hill and parasite eve scared the shit out of me. A bit later(still a kid) the dark area with the ashley sliding tile puzzle in RE4 did, but it was mostly due to the music and tight dark corridors(track is called Evil Malaise)
Lots of games have had me on-edge from tension and anticipation still, but nothing has me leaving the lights on at night. Movies do a better job at spooking me, but only found-footage type spooky stuff. Regular spooky movies are too predictable and cliche.

The last game I've played that actually scared me and wasn't just a cheap jumpscare has to be Resident Evil 2 Remake with Mr X. The library room where you have to move the book cases while hearing the footsteps, has to be the most scarred I've been playing a game. And I'm not claustrophobic but the crammed areas and rooms in the police department got me paranoid as I felt trapped in the scenario Mr X corners me. And the stomping just constantly makes me at edge.

Darkwood is scary but you just reminded me of this walking sim called Suicide of Rachel Foster. It's an incredibly unscary drama about being in an isolated hotel, and is almost entirely comprised of two people talking on a phone, and nothing paranormal happens except in this one specific room where some ghost hunters came to investigate. You watch a video tape they recorded of the door to the room you are currently in slamming closed and all of them panicking and running out. Then when you stop watching the tape and go to leave the room the door ever so slightly moves on its own just to fuck with you. It's the most spooked I have been by an incredibly mundane thing happening in a video game.

Palworld, it was my first encounter with a predator pal, way higher level than me too, I ended running away from it after it almost 1 hit killed me.

The fear was genuine, since I didn't have any teleport point close to that area, so dying there would be a pain in the ass to retrieve my stuff.

The game looks like it will break in a trillion pieces at any moments given how stuttery and glitchy the normal gameplay is.
Also the visuals of it and how the deeper you go on it, the more hellish everything gets.
Also it had some bizarre parallel world bugs with the gold bars being silver and all sorts of bizarre shit.
It didn't helped it was the first NES game i played after atari stuff.

I will make this post about video games by stating that there is a Walten Files fan game that I keep seeing shilled on xitter. I don't know it's name, I haven't played it - looks neat though.
>>715398249
I find parts of it creepy, but I consume my horror alone, in the middle of the night, without getting spoilers or reactions from other people - I try to isolate myself as much as possible because that's the only way anything on a screen really can freak me out these days. At this point though Martin Walls (the creator) is just trying to make a weird mish-mash of Breaking Bad, Five Nights at Freddy's, and movies like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre - I mean this literally, he used to talk about Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul on twitter a lot, the FNAF connection is evident already, and he's called back to TCM multiple times in between the series and his online presence. I like it for what it's worth, and the porn is incredible.
>>715404543
IIRC he remade the original Mysterious House short for the RRV tape - he put a remade Mysterious House, it's sequel (The Return of The Pumpkin Rabbit), and a couple more shorts that are exclusive to the tape together and put it out. I ordered a copy a few months back but they're sending them out in waves, so I can't vouch for any of the stuff on the tape that isn't The Return.
>>715401681
You jest, but I would go so far as to say that The Watermans are probably the only slashers that Gen Z has that are gonna be memorable in the next decade. I would go so far as to say that The Return of The Pumpkin Rabbit is the best modern slasher flick I've seen in years - and that should concern every red blooded American, because Slashers are the American genre - and we got beat out by some Chilean dude making FNAF adjacent fan fiction.

Yes, the very same.

>Is it good?
That is not an easy question to answer. It's absolutely unique, extremely clever, it broke a LOT of new grounds, and the only game that really pushed the medium further was Pathologic 2 which was made by the same people and drew a lot of inspiration from it.

At the same time... most people will find it essentially unplayable. It's incredibly janky, insanely obtuse, absurdly hard and unfair and just confusing.

Everything it does has a purpose and a point, but that does not change the fact that it's often just straight up unpleasant to play. Most people will not stick around for long enough to get to the point where it starts to make sense and come together.
And even when it comes together... it's still not a pleasant experience. It's a game about pain and dread, and it's really good at genuinely capturing those emotions through gameplay... but it's still an exercise in very unpleasant emotions. Most people have enough of those IRL and will not see much value subjecting to them in what is supposed to be entertainment.

Sorry if all of this sounds too vague or pretentious, but it's not an easy game to talk about. It literally does not fall into any established genre, it's just completely different from what games are expected to do.

I love it. For people like me, it's one of the best games ever made. I'm masochistic and obsessed with surrealism, dreams and melancholy, and I'm fascinated with the theory of how games can convey stories or themes. But... I absolutely understand why most people will hate it. It's a valid complaint to say that you don't see how games making you confused and miserable is something to praise. And this game is entirely designed around making you feel confused and miserable.

It is very unnerving, but i wouldn't say scary
The settings are so weird and dream-like, and the actual plot is so bizarre and apocalyptic
I can't think of a game that feels more like a dream, not quite a nightmare, where everything feels as bad as it could get before you wake up and feel extremely paranoid before going back to sleep again

That one Slenderman game that is half walking simulator freaked me out. I legit dropped it halfway through at the part where youโ€™re in some sort of basement in some wooden shack and thereโ€™s some witch looking woman there. I just went โ€œfuck thisโ€ and dropped it. Might come back to it later. Itโ€™s genuinely unsettling when you KNOW somethingโ€™s coming for you and it knows your exact location. With shit like Amnesia you can at least hide and take things at your own pace, but with Slenderman you have to keep going and never look back.
That said I did get a little freaked out by this one pseudo-jumpscare in Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs though but thatโ€™s mostly because I was high as shit at the time. Also the teleporting electric pig was genuinely fucking unsettling. Just its whole existence being this sort of horribly disfigured experimental creature that constantly warps in and out of reality as it chases you down and probably feels incomprehensible pain just felt like an unsettling thing to think about. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs felt genuinely unsettling at times in a way that the original game didnโ€™t. The original Amnesia was just edgy and dark but aMfP gave me this horrifying feeling of sinking deeper and deeper into a horrible place no human should be in. Especially since you had that map thing that showed you where in the facility you were and teased what came next. It was dreadful to think about what horrors awaited you at the bottom of the facility.
I mean, just look at this fucking thing

The jellyfish BT things in Death Stranding look kinda eerie when you first see them. Theyโ€™re just these weird grotesque balloon creatures ominously floating in place in complete silence, and thereโ€™s dozens of them. It just makes a bit of an eerie image, which is funny because theyโ€™re actually not a threat at all and in fact are pretty fun to shoot. You can just take an assault rifle and a blood bag and pop them like balloons and collect the goodies they somehow got a hold of

The last time I genuinely got scared by a game was in Yomawari 2.
Basically:
>Yomawari is a series about little girls traversing a town full of spirits and yokai for one reason or another
>The intro of the game has you doing the basic controls where you're shown how to use the flashlight, pick things up, and use them
>About twenty minutes later, introduces the map
>The second you check the map (pause menu) a monster hand rips the notebook from your hand and starts screaming in your face
>Noises of your bones being crunched up and eaten off screen occur
>Begin game as a different girl
I played the first game so I knew there'd be spooks (mostly atmospheric scares) but that caught me off guard completely and I kept expecting it to happen again throughout the rest of the game.

One of the few times i've been genuinely scared in a videogame. You're stuck in a claustrophobic small concrete room with flickering lights while a bunch of demonic looking things come after you from the dark corners, and it happens at the end of a level so you most likely have limited ammo

Sure, I was a kid. But it's not even a horror game, yet the way it took ~1hr worth of playtime to set the ground to make the jumpscare as impactful as possible was a masterstroke of writing.

This game is fucking terrifying. Especially on launch, where you had no clue how the AI worked. I remember being stuck in a room for at least 10 minutes out of fear, since I kept hearing it shuffle about in the darkness but couldn't tell exactly where it was in the maze of halls. Easily the scariest Amnesia game and up there for one of the best horror games overall.

Then they added Nightmare mode later and I literally could not continue the game from how scary it was.
