AI coding tools make developers slower but they think they're faster, study finds.

"After completing the study, developers estimate that allowing AI reduced completion time by 20 percent," the study says

Currently they're best used as a pair programmer to go over your shit and help you plan things. That's changing, but ultimately, yes, if you don't have a decent understanding of programming, cs, and the fucking ai you're trying to use, you'll have piss poor results.

tldr, they replace entry level devs easily, which wasn't even an issue as the job market for nu-coders was already rough and has been for years.

I just spent hours with Gemini trying to get react native for windows installed and running. When you're talking to it, it seems helpful and knowledgeable, but it turns out it doesnt' know shit and just runs you in circles.
Eventually I gave up after it recommended I reinstall my operating system to fix a build error.
I spent 5 minutes doing Google searches and got react native for windows installed and running.
Fuck LLMs.

I believe it. I'm not a programmer, but the only time I asked GPT to make me a batch file for a simple thing it was shit. And it was just 10 days ago. I can't imagine how it can help a real programmer doing real when it can't even program me a folder counter on the fly.

I lost faith in AI despite being one of its shillers for a while. I had so much trouble working with it when trying to code that it legit became easier for me just to have it give me free resources to learn. What would've taken a few days of "No, make it like..." turned into just a few hours of fixing.

the first version of chatgpt back in 2022 was great for coding, and pretty shit for most other things.

to make everything more normie friendly a lot of the coding knowledge and autist thinking that made it great for programming has been focused on less and less.

If you have API access for openai use version 3.5

All I needed was a script (I asked .bat or Powershell) that counted folders and items one level down (the same info I could get by right click>properties) to test a mass backup program before trusting it with my data. The first result was endlessly recursive. The second gave me all 0 as result. The third try was what I needed but took 4 minutes to run for a 100 folder test. It did the work fine in the end but if you need this many iterations for a 3 line script I can't imagine the time lost for real work.

first you have to dial in on a good prompt, and you still have to verify that the code is doing what you want it to

>how does AI even work?
Its a search engine and works with the logic of a search engine. Its quality and results are completely dependent on how much and what source material it has been fed. And even then it has no idea of any context its copying, because its a search engine that tries to generate something close to the original search results. Example image AI when you prompt an image like "boobs", it looks for images with the same keyword "boobs", generates a yellow pixel in the spot where most of the "boob" images have a yellow boob pixel.

Woman's faces and boobs are easy because internet is full of photos of women posing with steady studio lighting from exactly the same angles. But the AI keeps fucking up the hands, frills and necklaces because hands are usually not at the center of photos and can be in wildly different positions. The yellow well lit pixel of a hand is not always in the same place in every picture, so AI gets confused and makes weird mutated shit.

Theres one area where AI tech has genuinely improved things and thats image letter recognition software. Image OCRs were wonky at best at recognizing text that was hand written or in weird angles or lower resolution just couple of years ago. Nowadays Windows own image gallery has an image OCR feature that recognized 95% of Kanjis in my untranslated hentai smut. AI translations also slightly improve the text translation but AI also just makes a lot of shit up when trying to bridge the gap between words to form a coherent sentence.

Unqualified cheap labor can't fix things when they break, because they don't understand how things work. Thats the issue. Factories have been automatized as much as possible but they still need to hire people to constantly supervise the machines in case anything goes wrong. And when robot arms move hundreds to thousands of things an hour, things WILL go wrong and machines themselves don't know how to fix the errors.

You spend so much time debugging AI hallucinations, when a competent software engineer shouldn't even have to think about implementation at this level. All it does is reduce the cognitive load of having to think through problems that you already know how to solve.

Off course it does. Speed comes from refining skills and refinement comes from practice. If half of the work is made by a machine the machine is being faster but the human element is getting rusty and slower for lack of training.

Thats because its a good marketing gimmick and fools people into thinking the "AI" is smarter than it really is. Humans are social animals so we subconsciously seek human faces, bodies and social interactions. Draw two dots and an arc below them and people instantly think of a smiling face.

look forward to those results being ignored or attacked, techbros and executives haven't just drank the ai koolaid, they've gone and gace themselves an enema with it, jerked off into the punchbowl, and started puking into each other's mouths. AI shit is their new dearest baby and it can do wrong, they've all collectively sunk far too much money into the pit to allow anyone to tell them otherwise. AI devs have promised silicon valley unending profits purely on the ability to automate jobs alone, and everyone there would slit the throat of their own mother for a .0000000001% bump to their portfolio, so you can rest assured that a terminator style AI uprising could happen tomorrow and bigtech would be on their knees putting in chrome lipstick getting ready to suck arnie's soul right out of his dick

Team started trying it for a few months. It's kinda nice for extremely repetitive stuff, but when you try to get it to do anything competent you need to hand hold it and fix it so much that it becomes faster to just do it yourself.

That should come as a shock to literally no one. Yes, AI can code. It's fine for very small, one off things. But the problem arises when you start putting all those one off things together and suddenly all of the extra bloat the AI shoves in there starts to conflict, and the retards ask AI to fix it rather than to debug and debloat themselves, leading to even more bloat and bug shit that someone who actually knows what they're doing has to go in and manually correct. That's where the 20% slower shit is coming from, an actual person with coding knowledge debugging and debloating AI shitcode some retard put in.

Yes, it will. I shove an entire Python project into it and tell it to give me the specific scaling methods they use to convert the image into the model inputs and it will give it to me.

WAY too early to be judging like this. It's in its infancy, we've actually only had useful AI in programming for about 3-4 fucking months. Basically any model before Gemini 2.5 Pro or Claude 4 Sonnet was only barely worth using (Gemini came out on March 25th, Claude 4 was May 22nd). There's a certain threshold to cross where AI is either "too cumbersome to bother with" or "actually good" and we've only barely crossed this line.

Tay was actively fucked with by people that learned it existed, it wasn't trained on the whole of the internet the way current LLMs are
On top of that Elon Musk has been repeatedly sharting over Grok NOT being racist and being too good at fact-checking with the data model it has, so now Twitter's CEO quit along with a huge number of other resignations because Musk did or ordered something happen to it that made it start goosestepping overnight. I'll be real with you anon. I've worked the same site for 10 years. When I arrived at the job (TEN YEARS AGO) we had a faulty truck bay lift that you needed to held onto as it lowered or it wouldn't lift up properly. We all knew about it. We all whined about it.
They fixed it...earlier this week.
10 years of a broken lift.
10.
Years.

>People just work around AI fucking them up, by adding direct reference images or rotoscoped motion cap footage so the AI never has to generate hands at all, it only adds a filter on top of original manually drawn or photographed hands

You don't know what you're talking about. To fix hands you add a controlnet, which is a neural network that gives spatial conditioning control over the base model. Controlnets came from a 2023 paper and are now a pretty standard part of the suit of tools used when generating good images. A controlnet trained on pose estimation or depth estimation can be used to make sure the diffusion model produces exactly the hands you want. No direct reference images or rotoscoping involved. It's a neural network. Training is learning. It literally learned to do hands.

All the good proprietary image generators like dalle or midjourney or whatever are doing this kind of thing under the hood too. Your prompt is only part of the input.

You don't even need controlnet for hands, because yeah. Most models nowadays are trained enough to do hands and feet well. Some still struggle, especially with open toed footwear, but hands and feet are a nonissue most of the time simply by using adetailer or inpainting to fix them. Controlnet is great though for when you need very specific things, I'm just lazy and hate having to do shit like get the specific hand pose in blender and then export the hands on top of doing the maps.

Adetailer isn't just a workaround, it's the AI fixing it's own genning mistakes by passing the image it's generated through a second set of refined training data, giving it a better output result it still generates on it's own. It isn't. Its creating a visual filter on top of the 3D models. Thats not AI learning to do hands, thats you using a work around so AI doesn't have to actually do hands by itself. When you press the prompt button without extra tools, the AI still fucks up the hands like usual. Because AI doesn't know what "hands" are, its a fucking search engine, its results are slaves to the image banks that have been fed into it. And majority of photos and drawings have hands on the side, not as well lit as the face and chest and they're in various different positions.

That's... Exactly what AI training is. Are you stupid? You train an AI on reference images. It then uses that bank of known images to create new ones.
>The AI is once again not getting any better, people are just getting better at working around AI's weaknesses.
Again, not true. You clearly have zero idea how training and generation work. Speaking confidently doesn't make you any less wrong. It just makes you confidently stupid, and that comes across as even worse, since the confidence shows how little research you've done, or knowledge on the subject you actually have. Watch you claim LoRAs are workarounds for "AI being shit and not improving" because you are feeding a base model curated information on how to generate a specific subject or concept.

>Watch you claim LoRAs are workarounds for "AI being shit and not improving" because you are feeding a base model curated information on how to generate a specific subject or concept.
Because it fucking is. Heres a tip, DALL-E2 didn't learn how to composite generated images by itself. The coders manually hand-fed the basic Rule of Threes and Golden Ratio composition rules into DALL-E because the AI put the prompted subjects all over the place in the image. The more human manual work has to fake it, less convincing AI as tech overall becomes.

>Aka more direct reference images, specifically chosen to fix AI errors by offering template images of hands. The AI is once again not getting any better, people are just getting better at working around AI's weaknesses.

That's not what ADetailer does. It's just the AI running a second close up pass over its own output and overlaying it on the first. Just letting it do this fixes a bunch of issues in those areas.

Instead of posing "okay but how does this thing work" as critiques of the tool, you should save yourself time, go to /g/ and check the OPs of a few of the AI generation threads. Half an hour of reading and you'll have a good grasp of the basics.

Omar Dogan seethes at AI because AI does his own art better than he can. Mainly because the guy can't actually draw vaginas and his attempts at it always come out looking like non detailed, abstract vaginas with a single squiggle to define the labia. That's why he never took proper NSFW commissions. Meanwhile an AI can do plenty of different types of vaginas, all using his own style, and come out actually looking like a vagina. It fucked him up so badly that people would rather use AI to imitate his style and gen lewds rather than commission him for non lewd art that he went and purged over half of all his art across all his social media platforms, issued an apology to women for drawing bikini pics, and said he won't be drawing any remotely "lewd" images anymore because AI keeps being trained on it.

Yet it keeps fucking up the hands. Like I said, faces and boobs are easy because internet is absolutely full of good source material with good lighting and very similar poses. AI keeps fucking up hands because source material for hands is less consistent than 3/4 angle closeups of women's faces and boobs. Women in pictures usually keep the hands to the sides, or below, or put them behind their heads, or hold something in their hands. Thats so much variety that AI can't keep up. You need to do manual work arounds to fix that. Because of the way AI fundamentally works it can never fix it by itself, weird hands will always be a problem.

There's two problems with hands. The first is what you said: hands are harder to find consistent references to, especially since to speed up the collecting of data to process into a standard model they just lazily auto-cropped everything and hands and feet are the most likely things to get chopped out in that instance.
And the second: hands are more "high frequency" than boobs. Too many sudden changes and details that require the AI to generate pixels in a very defined pattern. Image generation gets worse the more detail you want when that detail can't be a random pattern. There's no fix for that because the problem isn't the training data it's the algorithm itself. You can give it massive amounts of preselected data to try and coerce the algorithm into fucking up less, but ultimately we're trying to ask a ostrich to fly by forcing millions of them off the cliff and cheering every time one of them doesn't go splat.

Because they were never artists to begin with. Digital "artists" are more akin to illustrators and designers. They only output what the masses want (whatever gets them their carving of a following on X/pixiv and payout on patreon/fanbox).

Art is self expression. Muddying it with what others want massively reduces its artistic value.

And once more, you are presenting extremely wrong information confidently as fact. You have zero idea how AI training works, and it's obvious you've never trained anything yourself, let alone genned a single image locally. Base models are trained. Adetailer models are trained. LoRAs are all fucking trained. Every single thing is trained.
>The coders manually hand-fed the basic Rule of Threes and Golden Ratio composition rules into DALL-E because the AI put the prompted subjects all over the place in the image.
Do you know what that's called, anon? It's called training. You train the AI on how image composition works by feeding it a bunch of examples of what you want it to do. It learns from those images and outputs the result based off of it's new knowledge of what you fed it. The AI doesn't just magically poof in to existence and suddenly know everything and how to generate it. Here's a suggestion. Quit being the poster child of the dunning kruger effect and go look up a youtube tutorial on how to generate a LoRA for stable diffusion. Actually take 15 minutes out of your day to see how you have to train the AI on data, and how that data is prepped and curated for the AI to begin with.

But it didn't learn anything, and makes the same fucking mistake again the moment you press the prompt button without extra tools. The whole "AI" is a buzzword. To make the AI do less mistakes you ironically have to use less AI and more manual input and fixes to make things look good. Thats not AI improving by itself, thats people working around the problems that AI will always have. The hand issue is not "solved" if you have to fucking fix them every time.

Depends heavily on the AI. Lot of the porn ones use suspicious amount of same poses and boobs that you start seeing repeatedly the more you prompt new stuff. Suggesting the "AI" is not generating the anatomy of images, but playing dress up on top of set images to get around the weird mutant hands and other anatomy issues.

the reason hands get fucked up is a lack of resolution to resolve the shape of the hand with occluding fingers. you can fix this by inpainting new hands which allows the ai to generate at a resolution that actually allows it to resolve the shape of the hand. this is a technological limitation that will resolve itself as vram increases allow for higher generation resolutions

No amount of vram will fix it because the source material has too much variance. Just go and browse /s/ for a while and notice how most images have women posing so that their faces and boobs are in same 3/4 angle in closeup shots, but the hands are usually not well lit and on the sides, behind the girl to bring out the boobs more, or doing something.

AI can't figure it out because AI hasn't been fed with 50 trillion images of hands from all angles in studio lighting the same way women's slutty faces and breasts have.

that's not true at all
every human has 4 fingers and 1 thumb per hand and there are only so many positions they can be in
the problem is that it's a high detail body part that is usually drawn very small in relation to the rest of the image, a hand is practically a whole 'nother person if you count joints and limbs.

>every human has 4 fingers and 1 thumb per hand and there are only so many positions they can be in
You forget that the arm has a ball joint on the shoulder that can rotate in 270 angle, attached to two hinge joints, one of which is a more flexible near 180 angle hinge joint which can also slightly skew left and right. That means in terms of a photograph or drawing, a hand can be depicted from thousands of weird and crazy angles, then add in the joints in the fingers and digits on top of that. Theres a thousand angles you can photograph someone showing a middle finger from.

Using drawings as reference for AI won't help either because drawings themselves often use real life reference.

Disney used live actors all the time. Usually they had the theater actors dress up in costumes and act out the scenes in front of a camera, then the "live reels" would be copied for each animator who would run them on constant loop and playback as reference.

And it makes sense, because not only does it make it easier to animate clothing, professional theater actors also know how to express better body language and have better ideas for expressions than some middle-aged animator sitting in front of paper all day. Disney studios also used plastic cast miniature rotoscoping for very rigid objects like deer horns in Bambi and Cruella De Vil's car in 101 Dalmatians.

Not just that but one of the best arguments for keeping humans around is "well, who is going to consoom product?" But it turns out, generative agents are capable of learning market behavior. So in a couple of years, you're going to become superfluous too, because the robots will end up shopping for parts/upgrades/things they like and you'll be unnecessary.

Disney didn't use rotoscoping for human beings because it always looked a bit off. They used them for solid objects that are not supposed to bend and stretch. Animating a rigid car rotating from left to right is hard as fuck without some type of reference to go with. 3D programs have been a godsend for a lot of artists and animators for that reason. Its not surprising at all that people with any art or editing background started getting around AI limitations with more direct reference pictures and motion capping.

Right I remember in some of the early Simpsons commentary voice tracks they had to sit there and use early 3D programs to animate cars moving and swerving as key frames for when a scene needed it. Meanwhile shows like Family Guy would just render the car in full 3D and plop it into the show.

Garbage in, garbage out.
If you are an expert at something and you ask gpt about it, you can notice if it gets something wrong. If you ask it about something you dont know about, maybe it does an okay job but gets some details wrong but you cant notice.

Its about the training data. They are poisoning the training data by training on internet comments.

That's one of the best ways to use the LLM's. Use them as a sounding board to get different perspectives or to talk out ideas.

LLM's do not think. They are prediction algorithms. Since they can not think the can not problem solve. Use them to help you finish your work instead of trying to make them the worker.

I'm right here. AI is the future. The mistake that most dumbasses make is that they think the future is now. LLM's are just a stepping stone, its important that we refine them but they are not the end by a long shot. What people should of done is use the hype generated to fund the next step instead of putting it all on a dead end thinking that AI workers have finally been created.

If it's the same people, using and not using AI, I can see it slowing things down because you have to then correct the code to make it play nice with the rest of the code and you spend more time trying to clean it up, or rebuilding, instead of just getting it near uniform in the first go.

I work with correcting AI and there's a lot more work once you learn the basics.
Knowing just the basics puts you ahead of any "vibe coder" that doesn't and thinks they can just feel things out.

Entry level needs to figure out how to market "I know the basics and can proofread AI" because it's not difficult, but is in high demand because people think they'll code the next hottest thing after asking GPT to make an app, only to end up with an error.

As an indie game dev here's what I've found...

AI is really good at taking your description of your problem, or of what you're trying to do, and, if it's something that already has concepts, techniques, algorithms, etc., that do or pertain to what you're trying to do, giving you a name, which you can then take and do research on. Finding the name of that problem, algorithm, etc., through googling, could take ages. AI finds it very quickly. This is extremely helpful.

It's also decent for bouncing ideas off.

It's TERRIBLE for generating code. The code it generates is highly prone to subtle logic errors. Sometimes it can transform existing code (usually, it's better at transforming existing code than generating new code, i.e. it can do a great job converting a recursive function to an iterative form) but you really do have to look at the code it makes under a microscope because it's very prone to introducing subtle bugs.

Use it when you have a problem and want to find out the names of "known problems", existing algorithms, etc., without spending ages googling and reading smarmy stackoverflow answers. Don't use it to generate code, and if you do, inspect the code VERY carefully.

There is literally already nothing they can be doing to provide this much 'value' to the company.
They are already grossly over-payed

The money they're making because of all the value the real workers are providing, not them.

The product is never going to be viable, "AI" is one big investment scam because LLMs can create visually impressive things for absolute midwits who don't understand them.

We're currently still in the hype phase, where most people haven't really run into this garbage beyond some gimmicky search results and low quality pastiche images run through a ghibli filter. When there's a concerted push by delusional execs who are told that this slop will save them X dollars a month, the whole thing is going to collapse like a paper tiger.

I wish AI was real, but LLMs are not AI. They have no true reasoning capabilities, because they have no true thought. There's an argument that if you can increase their context window enough (a few orders of magnitude more than every server system in the world right now combined), you could get something approaching intellect, but I'll believe it when I see it.

They're told that this is the future, they've seen it do something slightly neat, and they're all in on the scam. Governments are pumping a lot of money into this shit because cyber security is a big deal and if you get an AI that can actually think, then lol, lmao, you win an arms race that's bigger than nukes.

But the approach is fundamentally flawed and can't go anywhere. Eventually the money will dry up and the expectations won't be met, and all of those stonks are going to tank.

I think the best way to describe AI in the way it is now with ChatGBT, Deepl, Generative AI is that these innovations are to society what the Search Engine was to the Internet. It's a gigantic leap not just parsing through information, but creating information, providing context, and being able to filter through information. Someday I believe there will be AI for Social Media that will eventually help filter out things that are annoying. Think MGS2 in the Patriots. It feels like that but even more grand.

In a free market, when something bad happens to you, you have to be punished. Misfortune puts you in
a position to be exploited
and as every economics 101 textbook says, "a market in equilibrium leaves no unexploited
opportunities for individuals."
So some individual--and companies are people--will swoop in to exploit you. Tragedies are expensive.
All the squabbles about ChatGPT and art theft are an important
The creativity argument is one that the machine learning companies can afford to lose, so long as
they're allowed to keep deploying their systems.
Rationality is one of our big collective values, right? Making arbitrary decisions about somebody
welfare is frowned upon.
And since we don't really have any traditions to defer to, we have to come up with reasons for things.
People hate insurance companies and the police because they often just show up and make your life
worse.
AI offers two things: More exploitation and a veneer of objectivity.
Until now, people have had to make difficult, complex decisions, but a neural network is an empty shell
that will give you a decision
if you feed it data. It works much faster than a person, and it's easy to argue that the decision
is perfectly rational. A computer made it! If your insurance is automated, pricing decisions seem
objective and the contract can be revised in real time. Everything is stuffed with sensors now, and data
is already being collected and sold. It has been for years. So there's a constantly updating profile of
your behavior, and a neural network can use it to more perfectly screw you.

Yes, because slowly cannibalizing company provides better short-term profits and if you donยดt do that, youยดll be replaced by someone who will in the name of increasing quarterly profits.

AI is great at stuff like folding protein, but coding is completely different. it's great at the micro level but when you try to use it in a wider scope it just falls apart.

Why do you think people haven't thought about this? You can ask Chat-GPT yourself about it and it will explain exactly what AI programmers do. They often do not self-train LLMs, for example, which means they don't train it on its own data, exactly because it can create negative feedback loops.

Yeah but animation doesn't exist anymore so who cares really. You can't have time to be an animator and work whatever shit tier retail job or construction job at the same time, and you can't get shit for anything related to art/design/animation/motion graphics anymore.

says, it's going to implode eventually. It's not going to keep improving on its own and there's only a limited set of data to pull from. And the more people who use LLMs, particularly for production in corporate settings, the worse the stagnation is going to get. It's practically expected and it's only a matter of time before the biggest, richest companies have to board the life boats.

How would you know if every competitor does the same? They are also saving enough money to outbid any competitor going for quality.

Your choices:
- superior product at 110% of the usual price
- bare minimal product at 10% of the price

It's staving off an inevitable end. Remember, the more people who use the product, the worse the problem gets. It's a microcosm of economic stagnation, inflation and starvation. A very similar problem exists in academia that will never go away, LLMs aren't immune to it.

There's no reason for that to happen, no more than for computers.
AI may be glorified algorithms they do perform jobs no human can do, even if it's just saving them time.
Generating tons of crap have never bothered companies, in fact evil-minded corporate will definitely use it to lower average quality.

The bubble will burst, but only because some AI products will turn out to outdo their competitors.

This.
Think of how EA was desperate for investments a while ago and was making fake AI demos to get them. In the long run, some tiny company using AI will almost guaranteed outplay that massive corporation and they'll do it with like 20 GPUs and 3 Chinese men. The bubble will pop and the world won't care because they'll be playing FIA: Chinese Edition.

When the bubble bursts it's going to kill AI for public commercial use as we know it. It's a fantastic tool but it will outgrow its own potential for improvement.
Ultimately what really matters is whether or not sovereign AI becomes a standard and if it's used responsibly.

You seem to have no understanding of how useful those pseud-AI already are.
They produce retarded crap yes, but their consumers are retarded enough to encourage that.

>sovereign AI
If you mean that AI will be treated like nuclear weapon, we are far from the level where it becomes more than product. Same as computer system.
There will be commercial war but AI competition literally only need software, not that much hardware. So you can't block it like you can -attempt- to block the best electronic chipset technology to China.

If the AI became able to replace human engineer and improve themselves, now that would deserve treating them like that.

You misunderstand, I'm not saying AI isn't useful.
I'm saying it has a very limited potential for growth that exponentially diminishes the more it's used.
If AI will ever be able to replace human engineers and improve itself without degenerating, we've hit another leap in technology. But with the way LLMs work, it's not going to happen with current "AI" development, ever. Is strictly not possible without an entirely new approach and implementation. It'd have to be true, abstract AI and anybody trying to convince you otherwise is just trying to make bag.
