The marathon peaked at approximately 57,000 viewers, only 10,000 below SGDQ 2025's peak of 67,000, and averaged about 30,000 concurrent viewers to SGDQ 2025's 40,000. It's fucking astounding how hard GDQ has fallen off. It wouldn't surprise me if SGDQ 2013 outperformed 2025 in terms of viewers, and AGDQ 2014 undeniably did.

GDQ was at least watchable even when it was no fun allowed in the late 2010s. After the pandemic it just became an insane cult that was all about relentless minute-by-minute sociopolitical affirmation, reformatting the event into the staff performing a variety show, being as intrusive to runners and viewers as possible, running memes and donation comments trends into the ground, and the 80% of viewers who left were just wrong and unwelcome. I follow a couple dozen streamers I found through GDQ's peripheral (some non-speedrunners like Maximilian_Dood also used to make big donations) and I don't remember the last time one even attended besides Oats. It's clearly dead to them and they just keep quiet about it instead of rocking the boat.

>>715408008>>715408264>>715408467I admit that Poo phrased it poorly in his first post, but I'm 99% sure by "from a viewership standpoint" he meant "the experience for a viewer" and not "the quantity of viewers", so if you double down on the viewership total then you're really just pushing a data point unrelated to the original post.
i stopped watching when they started putting pronouns on screen in 2020. funny to see retards with low standards squirming more and more every year that the event they keep enabling keeps getting worse. gee i wonder why.
The only good run I saw was the Metroid Race. The event is fucked, no good runners even want to go anymore. There is too much downtime for how mediocre the runs are. They need to implement a rotating stage like bands do or something. While one run is going set up the next one on the back and then rotate. Stop reading so many donations and just put a donation ticker at the bottom of the stream. No more runs that are longer than 2-3 hours. No TAS bullshit unless there is a human interaction with it. Only one music game "showcase" per event not fucking 3+.

>>715408885>by "from a viewership standpoint" he meant "the experience for a viewer"That's clearly what he meant but the point about viewership numbers still stands, if it's such a good viewer experience why was the viewership rock bottom? If it's so enjoyable why were skits, concerts, "showcases", etc. bleeding viewers? Even normal runs were losing viewers.
>>715409063>Only one music game "showcase" per event not fucking 3+.What I don't understand is why they always have 3+ music games but rarely ever have showcases for other genres. The only shmup/stg I can remember ever seeing at a GDQ event was a single Touhou game. I'd rather see more of those than yet another Japanese arcade music game. We see an RTS game like once every 4 GDQ events, if that.
>>715409606Take it to Twitter if you want to argue that. I'm just pointing out that Poo and Anon are arguing past each other on unrelated points.
>>715408885>w-we're so back (based on my completely subjective and arbitrary criteria)Oh, so we're back to feelings again.
>>715409784>What I don't understand is why they always have 3+ music gamesBecause people really enjoyed the change of pace the first time they did it and it brought in a shitload of donations.

>>715408008I'm a 2010 user since Peacefuljay streams on Justin.tv. Seeing shit you like get big viewership for being awesome has always been exhilarating. Seeing shit you used to like down in the dumps because it's aggressively resistant to constructive criticism is a bummer. Those numbers are an excellent reliable metric that something has gone wrong, when it went wrong, and how damaging that wrongness is. GDQ's trajectory is no different than washed up streamers like MANvsGAME, and more recently heyZeusHeresToast and SHiFT. Views are down because the content took a nosedive (if not becoming outright hostile to the audience) and what was left of the community contracted around a cult of yes-men. It's a death spiral that only gets worse as it's forgotten every passing day by an aging audience.
It's a complete waste of time arguing with people who are going to be so obtuse about GDQ's downfall. They'd still think it was great if it was just Sent doing puppet shows from a leftover Ouya booth in a parking lot. That's their business I guess, they can have it. You're far from alone in thinking a core insular clique of a few dozen people at most destroyed something greater than themselves that was the collective effort of hundreds of thousands of runners and viewers who didn't have much say in the matter, and I don't blame you for saying your peace, but mostly everyone has moved on at this point and you'll never convince the in-crowd they made any mistakes. They're flying too high off their circlejerks and nights out at Applebee's with internet friends to care.

I dunno you guys, I can't speak strongly enough against speedrunning. I think the entire concept itself is stupid. Why do you even care about beating a game "as fast as possible"? What is the point of that? Inevitably it's just a grindfest where you resent 1 million times until you get lucky. Like...ok? You wasted a bunch of time to do something totally meaningless, congratulations?
What is even the purpose here? No seriously
>>715425656It's for people too low skill for real games like stylish action or even a garbage competitive genre like fighting games

>>715425632Yep and it all just happened at the same time for no reason
>>715425686I think, genuinely, it's some kind of weird autism.
Anyway, they probably think it's displaying skill, or intelligence, or something? But an intelligent person is not doing this. An intelligent person is someone who masters a new game, quickly. A skillful person is someone who can react to new situations, efficiently. Like a chess player, or a basketball player.
But a speedrunner mindlessly grinds and resets, going through a series of proscribed, memorized actions, to the point they can't even play the game normally. Like if you changed one of the levels, they would be totally at a loss.
So they aren't intelligent. They are skillful....at that specific run.....but at other games in that genre, or games generally? Sure a bit, but not that much.
Like, what are they even doing? It's so bizarre man, a lot of these are fucking children's games. They're nintendo games with nonverbal "bing bing wahoo" characters.
What gets me is that they break the game, glitch it etc etc then act surprised when the game acts strangely
Man I can't find it anymore, but there was this video about how BROKEN the Nintendo Online version of Ocarina was, and turns out it was "broken" because he couldn't do a ton of speedtranny bullshit lmao

I even miss the trainwreck years of proto at this point. Its so corporate and boring now. And I'm sure he knows this too because he runs his own speedrun events that allow much more fun than fucking nu gdq.
>>715435917>its more important to have fun than to focus on saving every single frame like an autistI guess it depends on your definition of fun. For me the fun part was always listening to some autist who has spent 1000+ hours redoing the same shit explain why he's doing what he's doing as he attempts to shave off seconds from his speedrun time. It's pretty clear that speedrunning events just aren't for me anymore though as I think what's "fun" for most people is akin to more of a lets play format where you attempt to get entertaining personalities and make it more of a relaxed playthrough of something. I understand it but it's one of the reasons why I tuned out a lot more than I have in previous years because it feels like it's becoming less of a speedrunning event and more of a video game entertainment variety show.
>>715396032Okay, I used to watch GDQ religiously back in the early 2010s. If I only were to watch 4 runs from this year's GDQ, which ones should I watch, /v/?

Especially since that's the same time reading donations superseded the games.
It's the equivalent of attending a fucking skinhead rally and watching them scream white rights. I don't want to watch either I want to watch video games but you just get some retard interrupting it to read about how jewish doctors killed someones grandma. What a waste of an event, time and money.

>>715437459That's great, maybe take that to a rally not related to video games.
Trans rights apart, speedrunning in general has just become really uninteresting
maybe it's a case of people just having more tool to find exploits and strats or something I don't really know, I'm sure part of it is a byproducts of speedrunning becoming a "community" over time and not as much just dudes that really like this one specific game they're really good at
For most of the runs, it doesn't even feel like the runner are particularly skilled or anything, feels like they're just following a memorized script that they memorized
At least to me it was a lot more interesting back then when guys like werster and cosmo were running and it was mesmerizing just watching these dudes know a game so deeply and adapt on the fly, it doesn't feel like anyone running at gdq is anywhere near that level, if they are it doesn't feel like it anyway
>>715437502It's an event for charity to raise awareness for trans injustices though.

That kind of attitude it what's wrong with speedrunning. They aren't running a game because they love the game, they're just speedrunning to be a speedrunner.

>>715395830 (OP)The pacman run was bonkers, the runner was cracked as shit and the dude on the couch was way too based for gdq
>>715437537The sad truth is that core speedrunning without any meme shit tacked on is dying out and fewer people are doing RTA in legacy categories with every passing year.
The old guard has gotten tired and chose to pursue things like randomizers, races, kaizo hacks and various other challenges that have little to do with the base game experience. Even the concept of a speedrun marathon has been perverted by this stuff, as evident by modern GDQ's game lineup.
At the same time, young people are joining the speedrunning community just to end up running ILs and playing games that barely anyone else does, because they're afraid of long-term commitment. You also have to factor in that to this group, they like watching content about speedruns more than partaking in the actual thing. I'm somewhat guilty of this because I've seen thousands of speedruns but have only uploaded two of my own, both of which are in dead games.
Speaking more broadly about the perceived lack of skill... It's true. Speedrunners are overwhelmingly worse than they used to be, and I think this can mainly be chalked up to everyone stretching themselves thin instead of sticking to just one category in one game.
