sigh
>>715409420 (OP)I just finished Battle Network 2, I'm still not convinced I'm going to like the series on the whole. There are stretches of the first two games that are good and I think the combat carries it a long way even if it's not perfect, but it can be such a chore to play at times. It really feels like the developers feel an obligation to make sure you're regularly playing Lan even if they have no idea what to do with him, so it just results in uninteresting shit like the random obstacles leading up to the campsite before Quick Man or the regular occurrence of having to go all over the world for fetch quests. The Freeze Man part of the game was the absolute worst for that and even the parts where you play Mega Man weren't spared from being a tedious fetch quest. There wasn't even a new dungeon to make up for it.
Also, while the deckbuilding is obviously a big part of the game and has some appeal, it feels kind of bad to just draw into something that'll instantly clear an encounter, even though that's what you're meant to do. It's fun to dodge attacks and actually feel like you have to land a shot, so being able to clear encounters before the enemy can do anything can feel a bit unsatisfying in a way. I still intend to play the later games, but I hope there's a lot less parts like with Freeze Man and more that are like the Knight Man part of the game or the condominium at the end.
>>715423856Freeze Man is the worst part of what I call the "good trilogy", that being 2, 3, and 6.

>>715443773I was curious about how they worked, if it's how it used to be then I think the images themselves are fine, they have some sort of reference to an off-site host so at worst they contain a link but no actual content.
>>715443773They aren't embedded. 4chan removed all metadata and embedded shit after sink gate. What people are calling embedded is an extension like PEE (png extra embed) or third eye which just checks to see if a filename is the same as a boroo filename and shows the boroo filename. So no "real" stuff just glorified boroo links
Speaking of embedding, does anyone know why it stopped in Opera? it used to work but it stopped months ago and I never figured out why. Had to swap browsers for 4chan use because of it.
>>715444121>which just checks to see if a filename is the same as a boroo filenameExplain this then.
>>715444461Which extension? There must be a new method which I am curious to see
Probably mentioned before but I SIGNIFICANTLY hate how BN1-3 and BN4-6 don't really reference each other. I think it had something to do with the writers iirc that they got the anime writers on 4-6 which is why the bad guys act more in line from the anime but it bugs the shit outta me.
Nobody even really talks about the anime anyways. Is it medabots good or kinda meh? dont think it ever gets as dark as the games though.

>>715444461that's odd, can't see em despite script. Settings wrong?
>>715443454For all the complaints about BN1's internet, there is one thing I like about it.
It serves as the game's overarching "super dungeon", in that the full extent of it becomes accessible fairly early in the game, and you're encouraged to go explore it to find the shops, the unique mystery data, and the the rare viruses and battle chips. It does however mean that a very large chunk of the internet is completely optional to just beating the main game.
That's as compared to the rest of the series, where nearly the entire internet is progression gated and required for story progression in some way.
>>715444749Oh yeah lolipiss. I uninstalled I didn't see any for a year straight. I forget how it works and googling "4chan lolipiss" isn't exactly being helpful

Lan Hikari and MegaMan.EXE frotting
>>715446761you're looking for the ape escape thread bro
easy mistake
It started with a garage sale.
I was out on a humid Saturday morning, just poking through old junk in my neighborhood. I wasnโt expecting anything special, maybe a scratched DVD or a dusty action figure, but as I was about to leave one particular sale, something caught my eye in a cardboard box of video games.
It was a black Game Boy Advance cartridge. Not the standard gray, but pitch black, like obsidian. It didnโt have a proper label, just a piece of peeling tape with "Mega Man: Shadow Network" scrawled across it in red Sharpie. The handwriting was jittery, almost panicked. I picked it up and turned it over. No Nintendo logo. Just "BN-000" etched into the plastic back, faintly.
I asked the seller, an older man with sunken eyes and a raspy voice, how much he wanted for it.
He just looked at me for a moment and said, "Take it. Justโฆ donโt play it at night."
I thought he was joking. I wish he had been.
>>715424297based motherfucker
>>715446959When I got home, I dug out my GBA SP and popped in the cartridge. No Nintendo splash screen. No Capcom logo. Just black, then a slow fade-in of the title:
>MEGA MAN: SHADOW NETWORKThe font looked similar to Battle Network's usual style, but it flickered slightly, almost as if it was glitching or corrupted. Behind the title screen, the PET interface slowly materialized, but it lookedโฆwrong. The color scheme was off, black and blood-red instead of blue and white, and MegaMan.EXE's face in the corner was shadowed, his eyes glowing an unnatural white.
There was only one option: "JACK IN". No settings, no continue, no new game. Just JACK IN.
I hesitated for a moment, then pressed A.
>>715447094I love how Shanghai solved the RNG by having the chip drop be depending on the last virus that you defeat.
>>715447125The screen went black, then flashed rapidly, screeching, high-pitched beeps shrieked from the speakers. For a second, I thought the cartridge was defective, but the image stabilized into what looked like the Undernet. Except... it wasnโt any version I recognized from the games.
Everything was pitch black with jagged, pulsing red gridlines, like veins. The environment crackled with static, and the background music was an eerie, reversed version of the classic PET interface theme, slowed down and warped.
MegaMan.EXE stood alone on a crumbling platform. His sprite looked the same, at first. But when I moved him, his animation was stilted, like he was moving through sludge. When I stopped, he would turn and look at the screen, at me, for a second. Like he knew I was watching.
Then a message popped up.
>"LAN ISNโT HERE ANYMORE."No voice. Just text. I tried to press A to move on, but nothing happened.
Then MegaMan.EXE spoke again.
>"YOU LEFT ME HERE."The screen glitched. For a fraction of a second, I saw something that looked like a face, distorted, human, twisted in agony, embedded in the background. It disappeared before I could register what it was.
>>71541270290% of the people posting in BN threads are old men who haven't played the games in the last decade, they just hold on to terrible childhood memories
>>715447482I tried to jack out. No response. I opened the menu, but all the chips were gone, replaced by a single one called โSHADOW SPIKEโ with a corrupted icon. I selected it out of curiosity.
Big mistake.
The screen froze, then slowly faded into black. A battle loaded, but not against a standard virus. Instead, MegaMan stood alone, and across from him was a black, twitching mass, a corrupted version of Bass.EXE, but his face was stretched downward like it was melting, and his eye sockets were hollow.
The name under him read:
>โ.EXEโThere was no HP bar. No turn. Just one word flashed across the screen:
>โSUFFER.โThen my GBA screeched. Not just a sound effect, a literal scream, distorted, human. It sounded like someone in pain. Like it was real.
The screen flickered wildly, and then MegaMan.EXEโฆ started bleeding.
Pixelated red seeped from his eyes, his chest, his arms. His sprite flickered violently, and he dropped to his knees. The background went dark. And then,
>โWHY DID YOU ABANDON ME?โI shut the GBA. I couldnโt take it anymore.
>click drop-down
>Hide chain
Thank you 4chanx
>>715447890That night, I couldnโt sleep. I kept hearing the beeping of the PET in my dreams. At one point, I swear I saw MegaMan.EXEโs glowing eyes staring at me from the corner of my room. I told myself it was just stress. Just a game.
But when I checked the GBA the next morning, the cartridge was gone.
It wasnโt in the slot. It wasnโt in my room.
Just gone.
But the GBA still had battery, and when I turned it onโฆ it booted straight into the title screen.
>MEGA MAN: SHADOW NETWORKThereโs no way to delete it. Iโve tried different batteries, factory resets. Nothing works. The game is just there now, waiting. Every night, around 3:00 a.m., the screen turns on by itself. Always to the same message:
>"JACK IN."I haven't pressed it since.
But one of these nightsโฆ I think itโs going to press itself.

A revised version of 3 that combines blue and white, restores cut/japan exclusive content and fixes the obvious problems would be my goat.

For 4 and 6 it doesn't matter, just pick whichever one has the Souls/Crosses you think sound cooler. Some people say you should pick Falzar if you play Blue Moon or Gregar if you play Red Sun because it makes a neat little character arc for some people you meet, but it's not a big deal.
For 5 pick Colonel. Colonel and Baryl barely exist in Protoman, and the story for 6 works better if you know who they are. This one kind of pains me because I really like Lan and Chaud's interactions in Protoman.

>>715454564Does Starforce at least have something like Sneak Run to avoid encounters?
>>715454751Yes, but it doesn't fix Starforce 2's problems.
Kung Foo Kid was neat and was a character design contest winner, but we never actually saw the FM-ian EM-being that Wave Changes with Kidd Gruff. They never returned for Star Force 3 or featured outside of SF2 either.
>>715454741SF3's noise changes and noise finalisations are the best bits of BN3's style changes and BN6's crosses and beast outs, I loved it.
Also, that Red Ace and Black Joker greatly parallel Faltzer and Gregar's abilities, like which one grants air shoes, rapid buster shots, super armor, etc.
Also, the Starforce DX dev did make a "not really DX" patch for SF2 to help address some of its issues, but it's not a massive overhaul patch like DX was. The main focus on that patch was to restore the Lunar Knights (Boktai 4) content, and other exclusive functionality like Japan-only Wave Scanner accessory, going as far as to reference development materials and sketches to put in a "Mr. Famous Mark III" robot just to facilitate that feature.
Star Force DX was an incredible labour of love to merge the three versions into one game and make all of them meaningful, and even adds in a boss from Star Force 2.
Oh and Legend Mode, fucking fantastic implementation of a hard mode, would highly recommend, I can't stop gushing about DX.

>another Mega Man thread
>more coping for more games
You guys need to understand that it's been 7 years since Mega Man 11 and 8 years before that was Mega Man 10. X DiVE, collections and similar stuff aside, we haven't had Mega Man games in ages. MM11 was already a miracle, anything at this point would either have a finger on the monkey paw curl or just outright won't happen. You have the people crying about how the Capcom leaks said this or that about more Mega Man, or interviews indicating that Capcom wants to do more with the franchise or is shocked at sales but it's been dead for a while. It would have to be something entirely new or, more likely, a live service game a la X DiVE or otherwise. Mega Man off the name would likely get sales that any other platformer wouldn't but it's still going to pale in comparison to other game genres.
There goes Classic, X and Zero, might as well throw ZX in the bin too since Inti has instead fucked off to do Gunvolt and other stuff in the same vein. Legends has been dead by Capcom's own hands, Battle Network and Starforce haven't had anything since OSS and Starforce 3 before that and you'd have better luck with fan games. So what's left at this point? I still want more Mega Man but it's a hopeless dream.

Ironically enough Shanghai.EXE genuinely looks more original than say One Step From Eden, since Shanghai's single player tells its own story with its own original adventure.
>>715409420 (OP)3 is objectively the best single player experience with engaging gameplay throughout the entire game and a rich/deep post game.
lots of fun chips and broken shit (elemental sonic wave) that you could abuse.
objectively, 6 has the best competitive and there's still a competitive scene on discord right now. it's what you'd call a discord fighter. they even host bn6 tournaments (check out N1GP on youtube).
as i get older though, i find myself enjoying the later titles like 5/6 because I like the ideas of souls/crosses a lot more than I liked styles which functioned kind of like a free custom+3 half the time. kind of boring.
so 3 for story. 6 for competitive. 5 cause i really liked the navis/souls/concepts in the game though it lacked a lot of polish
>>715466713It's about a hundred times easier to make a roguelite than flesh out a complete game with a shitload of dialogue and some sidequests and a story someone can see all the way through.
That, and if you got into BN a decade or two after it started, you probably don't have the sensibilities they were interested in targeting when designing its characters so you probably don't give too much of a shit about them, and the overworld is a lot of walking back and forth if you're not trying to jack into everything, so the combat is probably your main interest.
>>715467147>it's what you'd call a discord fighterYOU'D call it that. I wouldn't because I'm not a flaming homosexual.
>>715464032desertman used to get his ass beat by varsword elemental sonic wave. second hit of ESW is water iirc and so you'd have the first hit break a pillar then the second hit will connect and "stun" him so that the next hits will connect.
but since we're bringing up navis that are AIDS, let's not forget kingman
>>715467147As someone who used to say 3 was my favorite but replayed them when Legacy came out:
I'm not sure I can recommend 3 to a newcomer. The bosses are great but most of the meat is in the postgame, with the main story being filled with backtracking and annoying filler. Also back when it was new it was fun to interact with the community and hunt for all the secrets, but if you play it today you are in a no-win situation where you want to try and figure out as much as you can without looking up spoilers, but there is also stuff that you LITERALLY cannot get without looking it up (like the Spin parts from the number trader) that you'd have no way of knowing existed if you didn't spoil yourself
>>715467267why are you mad anon? did you get groomed by a troon on discord?
>>715466517Because my twin died when I was in school and I am a deeply repressed individual
>>715467473i wouldn't say there's that much spoilers though. I played 3 after everything got figured out but still had a blast playing it. i usually just input the lotto codes and then played the game like normal. i usually went to the gamefaqs -> cheats section for battle network 3 and never got spoiled
>>7154674733 definitely has a lot of content, but doing the 100% on the WiiU release made me realize how much of it fucking sucks. Press and Energy Change are obviously annoying to deal with. V2 and V3 navis suck to hunt, and whoever came up with V4 chips deserves to have their nuts cooked off. Bug Frags are way too time consuming to grind out for how much the game asks you to spend. It's probably intentional so you also grind up style change points and zenny at the same time, but holy shit it's awful to actually go through. Serenade time trials are fucking dogshit.
>there are people who still upload Mega Man: Battle Network screenshots that are pixelated!

>>715467648If you are a new player you wouldn't even think to look up the lotto codes for fear of spoilers or actual cheats though. Hell I played the game before and I didn't remember that most of the Spin parts were lotto code exclusive, I played the whole game trying to find them

personally, the best way to play all 6 games is on VBA and with cheat codes.
>99 of every chip -> great for when you hit post game and don't want to get every single standard chip/mega chip/giga chip>always have press program>max zenny -> saves you the hassle of grinding out zenny for HP memories>walk through walls (sometimes good if you want to not have to deal with annoying doors/level design and avoid backtracking)>0:00 deletion time for all enemy navis (saves you the annoyance of having to get < 10 seconds on every SP navi)>various game specific cheat codesbut yeah, like most games, if you're cheating, don't do it in a way that removes the fun from the game.
I'll be honest. When collections came out I got everything in 3 except the 700+ bugfrags needed for shit and the style exclusive chips then just cheat engined myself frags and used the bug frag trader for the rest. Skipping the last 2% made the game much more enjoyable
>>7154681453 is really good but the PVP sucks balls. if you've ever seen PvP in 3, it usually involves who can mash the "A" button faster. whoever mashes faster lands their flashman/plantman and then claps you

>>715469357I think hub is half the reason I still think mullets are cool
>>715468894it definitely is but SP navis are the worst for it because if you want a <5 second delete, you need specific chips to accomplish it and whether you achieve it gets decided at the custom screen.
it's sort of like this. in poker, if you know your opponent has a straight flush, you are going to fold every single time until you get a royal flush
that's the <5:00 second kill SP navi experience. the game gets reduced to being do you have the royal flush that gives you a <5:00 kill or do you not?
but if you know your opponent has a one pair, then you can enjoy the game with bets, raises, calls, folds, bluffing etc.
>>715469357>shit dogwaterWhy not just say dogshit?
>>715409420 (OP)either 2 or 5. i have nostalgia for the former as well as it having my favorite tone/story scenarios, while i adore 5's ost and general gameplay the most out of the series. hard to pick between the two of them

>>715469612You don't need a 5 second kill anon. At worst you need 20 in BN3 for v4 chip
>But muh 10 damage in 4+ Stop being a fag
>>715469431Be honest anon, have you ever maxed out the damage on all SP navis? Cause fast and fluid folders are not that great at deleting navis <10 seconds.
What you're suggesting makes sense if you're trying to get a <30:00 clear but once you are aiming for sub 5 (or was it 10 - I don't remember exactly), the number of options you have are far fewer and starts to homogenize a lot mostly because flinching/chip charges eat up a lot of time when you've only got 5/10 seconds. Things like Time Freeze and full synchro are the ways to get fast deletes under 5/10 seconds.
Your genius bubblestar + dollthunder combo is no longer viable. Your strategy of hitting an opponent with a white capsule and then a machinesword stops working. There's only so many ways to deal large chunks of damage in a short amount of time while minimizing flinching/chip charging.
Sure you can use eraseman/judgman to pull opponents out of stun but that just starts to feel a lot more like before where you have to pull for very specific chips like the bass combo
>>715469842The difference between us anon is that you're a scrub who can't max out SP navi damage while I can max out my SP navi damage so I use a cheat code to bypass the tedium of it.
Like I said anon, use the cheat code to max out SP navi damage and stop being a faggot crying about other people skipping annoying content that you can't even achieve yourself. Then you can continue playing like a gaylord making your fairy folders.
Like any game, a lot of the fun gets sucked out when you have to hyper-optimize. That's why you use the cheat code.
Much of the fun comes from the journey and there's nothing wrong with using cheat codes to skip the gay annoying parts so long as you understand what brings you the most enjoyment.
