it's a memory card. allows you to delete saves etc from it. Also some games used it for pointless shit like a Tamagotchi . I don't think I ever took it out of the controller.

That's not just a screen that's the VMU, that's where your save files would get stored, many games utilized it to display information like pic related and it could even be used as a portable console to play simple games, just like the Pocket Station for the PS1

Dreamcast was made around the time of the first Tamagotchi craze. These things could play simple mini games, which some games used for unlocking extra stuff in the main game. Assuming both have batteries you can also trade saves without a console or play two player minigames with the port on the top. The biggest downside is how fast they go through batteries, two CR2032s in less than a month.

Dreamcast was only goated if you were a huge fan of 90s arcade games. Otherwise it was like a PS1 with better graphics but far fewer games.

That would be the Saturn, where people play games available on PSX and say the worse graphics and slowdown contribute to the charm. Dreamcast had some good exclusives and ports.

I honestly find most of the "Dreamcast Classics" very unappealing. I did finish Sonic Adventure but hopefully I never need to play it again. Shenmue was just boring. Basically whenever I see "must owns" for the console I just have no interest.
For me, Dreamcast is D2, Kenji Enos pretentious magnum opus. The best console version of Hydro Thunder (including Midway Arcade Treasures 3, yes). Gunbird 2, got really good at this one when I worked in the arcade. The full fat Soul Calibur original, for some reason all the digital download ports cut off the main single player mode.
I haven't sold my Dreamcast keyboard for Outrigger and Typing of the Dead, neither of which I play heavily mind you but they are cool.
I do like the console but I wouldn't consider it my favorite.
