Demon's Souls
Wow. I can't believe I missed out on Soulslikes all these years. I can't believe I played trash like Oblivion or Skyrim, when Demon's Souls existed. I tried to play Sekiro first, but I had a lot of trouble figuring out, when the game wanted me to be parry, so I played Demon's Souls first to help me get used to this type of game.

This is easily one of the best games I have ever played! All of the game's systems and mechanics fit so well together.
>no savescumming allowed, the game FORCES you to play Ironman mode
>dying is properly integrated as a game mechanic
>the entire game map (except bosses) resets each time you rest/teleport/die like a roguelike, that's kinda cool
>weapons not only have stab/slash/bash damage, but the combos you can do also take into account, whether you did a slash or stab with the sword
>magic items like rings are very impactful and can change your entire build like the equipment weight reduce ring allowing you to both wear heavy armor and roll
>game doesn't force you to search every single barrel for secret items like a maniac and secrets are often visible from far away, you only need to figure out a way to them

Bosses aren't that hard. I defeated Phalanx first try, but he did game me a bit of scare, until I defeated the little Phalanxes quicker than he could make them. No "boss" in Oblivion or Skyrim is as interesting as the first boss you fight in Demon's Souls. It's unapologetically gameplay (fun) focused.

>Ironman mode
There's no permadeath. No lives or continues. Or rather you have infinite ones. Back in the NES days when you ran out of lives - you had to restart the entire game from the very start. That said, the games used to be only like a couple hours long.
>resets each time you rest/teleport/die like a roguelike
Enemies just respawn. And some elites don't. That actually makes grinding a viable tactic for skilllets.
>Bosses aren't that hard.
Demon's Souls had a much larger number of gimmicky/puzzle/setpiece bosses compared to the later FromSoft games, which have bosses that will test your skills and understanding of the game mechanics on all levels. DeS in general feels more like a prototype for Dark Souls these days. Of course, compared to shit like Oblivion, even the weakest FromSoft games would feel like a masterpiece.
Enjoy your journey, OP.

But can you pile a room full of cheese? No? Thought so. Todd can't stop winning even 10 years after his death. RIP.

The action is the worst part of souls, testing the skills of toddlers.
Demon's souls understood it's an adventure game and made the bosses puzzles
