The writing is still above average, especially with the companions, and every single other aspect from combat to teambuilding to exploration to sense of adventure to quest design to interactivity to reactivity to player freedom are absolutely top notch.

There's not even any RPG that comes remotely close.

BG3 is all of that and more because Larian was finally forced to write something that was not throwaway plot.

I breezed through it on highest difficulty. I didnt even know the doctor guy in act4 had a second phase since my guys killed him so fast lol.
Doesnt change the fact that the armor/cc system is very poorly thought through and rewards all-phys/all-magic parties

DOS1 had one meta that was clearly stronger than all the others, which was just perma-spamming CC. DOS2 remedied this and has much better balanced the combat with the armor system and the round-robin system. You can still apply CC, but CC are in armor or magic-armor class, and you must deplete that armor type if they have it. There are also some that can go through armor, such as with talents.

All this does is stop braindead universally OP CC spam strats. It's just a new and unique approach that shakes up combat, requires consideration in combat and teambuilding, and rebalances the hyperfocus on CC spam from the previous game, while making more builds viable. It doesn't force monotype teams; phys mono, magic mono, and hybrid are absolutely all viable, even on honour, and have pros and cons and different playstyles.

Based take. SMT4 and Apocalypse are the last games that actually gave a damn about player agency AND consequences. You make a choice and the game doesnโ€™t pat you on the head-it shoves your face in what that choice caused. Plus, the atmosphere, music, and demon negotiation were peak. Meanwhile BG3 is just Netflix-tier writing with โ€œLOL funny bear sexโ€ memes slapped on top. SMT stays timeless, Larianโ€™s stuff will be forgotten in 5 years when the next flavor-of-the-month slop drops.

Solo is peak.

Necromancy magic deals physical damage, polymorphy is buff magic for physical damage, and then there's sourcery magic.
The alternative is what we have in BG3, where spells and crowd control wont even let the enemy make their moves.

TRVKE. The choices in that game especially during combat were such a fantastic addition. The alignment system and varied endings are probably my favorite in the franchise.

The armor system is bad, but it's still a 10/10 despite that. And it's a really bad system, so that tells you how good the rest of the game is.

A game for people who love the genre. Braccus Rex was excellently built up if you ran around autistically reading everything/exploring the entire map like I did, yet I saw a bunch of people complaining that he came out of nowhere.

No, the alternative is having one big shared armor bar, and the lower it is the higher % chance for your CC to work

Then add talents that enhance/conditionally modify that %, ie.
>when on fire, 30% armor is ignored for purposes of CC
etc.

DOS2 might be my favorite crpg just because it does away with rtwp and tabletop systems, which are both shit for videogames. Tabletop systems like AC, saving throws etc are needlessly complicated and knowledge checks players. Pointless when you're using a computer, which can do complex calculations for you and doesnt neccessarily need to show you every step in the process. In most CRPGs you spec every single character for high enough rolls to pass AC and there's little build diversity because of it. Mage, Warrior, or rogue, your next level up is just going to be a +1 to rolls with a specific weapon or spell class.

Rogue Trader is very similar so if youre looking for another pure turn based crpg thats a good 1.
