The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
md5: 6f6fbfec5fe5e604ca48107789ff27b5๐Ÿ”
I'm not sure it holds up. It doesn't have analog camera, it runs at 240p resolution and average 20fps, there's hitching when you pause the game, saving quitting and resuming doesn't retain your position in the game, most puzzles involve block pushing or just shooting a switch, there's unskippable cutscenes every 30 seconds, the lock on bounces to enemies you dont intend it to, there's knee high fences you cannot vault over, there's inclines the horse refuses to move beyond, you have to play several songs and run back to the temple of time to transform between child and adult forms, rupees are completely worthless and seemingly the only reward you get for exploration, the dialogue options are redundant just forcing you to pick Yes, there's tons of things the game just doesn't explain, there's tons of things the game over explains, the map is useless, a lot of the only sidequests in the game are fetch quests, nonexistent swimming controls, arbitrary limitations between child and adult link items, the teleports between areas leave a lot to be desired, no faster movement mechanic for young link, the challenge is virtually nonexistent, there's a lot of backtracking for 100% completion, Navi gets stuck repeating the same info routinely, many items are just palette swaps or replacements with the same functionality, and there's no world building or character development.

For its time like 30 years ago it must have been really impressive, however these days I can probably give it a 7/10. I would rather play basically any other game, at all, or in this franchise even.

The hitching exists on N64 hardware and in emulation of the rom too. It's not hyperbole, everything you do in the game causes a cutscene, press a switch, door locking, boss fight begins, exiting a crawlspace, everything. The fence I was specifically referencing was in front of hylia lake, you have to use a ladder or the horse. Not true about the lack of explanations of some things. Literally saying glitch the game to move quicker. At that point I need to tell you to play the game, the tunics are color swaps, the bow and slingshot are item bloat they do the same things, but they're hamstrung around the child and adult link inventory divide. There's no character development or world building in this game.

There absolutely is, are you retarded? The NPC dialogue and especially the dungeon design is pretty damn potent for a game its size. Half of why OoT was and still is so popular is because its story is so effectively told.

The story of getting three macguffins, a palette swap ocarina, fast forwarded 7 years later, five more macguffins, and ganon waited for you to show up? It's not effectively told, it must be part of your conditioning. The story is practically nonexistent. NPC dialogue in this game are just mentioning something relevant to make progress.

Ocarina of Time has the same thing Wind Waker had going on. The ole coveted these winds shtck in lieu of development. One note characters saying one thing when you press the action button on them. Sheik reading poetry to you before teaching you a warp song. There's zero development in the entire game. Shit like picrel is particularly egregious.

>Link being an outsider in Kokiri Forest because he lacks a fairy with Saria as his only friend, then gradually coming into his own as he leaves and explores Hyrule only to lose everyone he grew close to because they're all Sages
>The sages' storylines and how they contribute to Link's character development
>Mido's regret and apology in the Lost Woods thinking he's responsible for your death after driving you out of the forest
>The Lost Woods in general, how Link could only navigate it thanks to Saria's guidance, the Skull Kid(s), and Fado's warning that Link will become a Stalfos if he stays too long
>The pretty damn cruel way Ganondorf went about getting the stones, how he caught Link and Zelda conspiring and later tricked Link into opening the Temple of Time for him
>The Forest Temple and how the Poe sisters grieved for one another
>The city guard that sided with Ganondorf who eventually becomes a Poe peddler
>The Fire Temple and the Gorons' history with Volvagia
>The Ice Cavern having no living enemies other than Keese
>The whole Bottom of the Well > Shadow Temple > Bongo Bongo sequence with a shitload of worldbuilding about Hyrule and the Sheikah
>The curse on the Skulltula family and how that relates to Kakariko Village
>The several mentions and implications of a relatively recent war up to and including why Link's mother left him to the Deku Tree in the first place
>The Spirit Temple with the Gerudo's interpretation of Din and insight into Ganondorf's background
>Zelda in general, especially wrt her time spent as Sheik
you're fucking retarded. Simple as. This isn't all of it either, and I'm not even getting into how all this relates to Link's character development. It's very much a classical hero's journey; even though Link never speaks, you can easily intuit where the highs and lows are and how he's feeling just by the context. Just because it's integrated into the gameplay and environment doesn't mean it's not there.

Do I need to go down the list one by one?
Link coming into his own as he leaves, what does that mean? he got a fairy companion? why is it important, game doesn't say.
Sages storylines? what is that? and how they contribute to Link's nonexistent character? get real.
Mido apologizing is a one off scene, he is never important to the plot or anything. He says Link's responsible for killing Deku Tree, and later says he's sad that Link seemingly died. LINK IS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM, but because he's not a fucking character it's just left up in the fucking air.
>The Lost Woods in general, how Link could only navigate it thanks to Saria's guidance, the Skull Kid(s), and Fado's warning that Link will become a Stalfos if he stays too long
This is some thick headed shit. In general?? warning of being a stalfos? that is a one off scene during the fucking trading sequence. Skull kid? he says he's friends with Saria and gives you a heart piece if you play the song. Saria's guidance? she acts exactly like Navi when you press C Up, when you play her song. The fucking owl tells you finding her is as easy as listening to the music she is playing. The entire lost woods sequence is a fucking throwback, a homage, of the lost woods from Zelda 1. It's literal nostalgia bait and member berries.
The cruel way Ganon got the macguffins? you mean the mention of placing a boulder in front of dodongo's cavern, a parasite in Deku Tree, and poisoning Jabu Jabu, right? these things demonstrate Ganon's character, but it's not any sort of development.
THE FUCKING FOREST TEMPLE? THE MINIBOSSES OF THE TEMPLE? are you kidding me right now. What in the fuck are you talking about.

should I address the rest of his green text or is it clear he just spouted off a bunch of things without considering it a bit deeper?

Yeah, alright, you're retarded. Don't need to tell me twice.
>>715463101
The game tells you most of this directly. The only theoretical stuff is in the environmental stuff, but even then most of it is fairly obvious and things like that are designed for you to see, contextualize, and interpret. Many games function like this.
>>715464090
>coming into his own as he leaves
Rauru is explicitly a mentor character and he befriends several of the other sages (and others, like Malon) and has a pretty clear character arc as he goes through the dungeons.
>Sages storylines
Each sage has a full storyline.
>Mido apologizing is a one off scene
And yet it's still character development, both for Mido and for Link's closure wrt the Kokiri.
>Lost Woods
This is all worldbuilding, retard. Hylians become Stalfos when they get lost in the woods, meaning Link will too. It's an implied end that's expounded upon in TP. Reusing locations in a consistent world still counts as worldbuilding btw.
>The cruel way Ganon got the macguffins?
Poisoning the Deku Tree, putting a parasite in Jabu Jabu, and cutting off the Gorons' food source, actually. It exposits his character and gives you the lead-up for Link's development once he fucks over Zelda's original plan.
>Saria's guidance?
Her song is the guidance, retard. You get to her by listening to her song in the Lost Woods, and you get to the Forest Temple later because you've memorized her directions.
>Forest Temple
Purple poe sister has a crying animation, environment indicates it's their place. It's one of the weaker dungeons wrt worldbuilding, but it still has some.
By the way, silent protagonists aren't inherently non-characters. Link has an obvious arc, especially with the time travelling shit as a kid in an adult's body and what each dungeon represents.

Rauru is a complete enigma. At first he's an owl giving you directions. Then he is a fat guy in a trench coat who dressed Link and pierced his ear. Even he lacks any development.
Malon is the closest thing we see to character development and even that isn't done well.
>Each sage has a full storyline.
Each sage is a bumfuck Link met on his adventure and gets promoted to guard duty.
Mido has no development, do you know what that word means? it means we see them change through implicit means. Mido blocks the Deku Tree, then Mido blocks the Lost Woods. He just says he feels bad that Link is dead. HE IS NOT DEAD, are you retarded? There's a clear cut example of dropping the fucking ball.
Lost Woods is not world building, what is it, why is it there, what is the purpose of it. It's just a forest where people get lost and turn into stalfos for no fucking reason.
Ganon puts Gohma in the Deku Tree actually see picrel. Puts parasite in one place, puts parasite in another, he has a very simplistic playbook it would seem? IT EXPOSITS HIS CHARACTER?? development, Retard. Where is it.

You piss me off with how much shit you project into the game, you're arguing based off how you fucking feel about shit rather than what is implicitly in the game. Did you watch the comparison between Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time above? and throughout the game the characters develop and change based on Link's actions. Nothing like that happens in Ocarina of Time. THAT is character development, and not the fucking stagnated cluster of ideas you spit out left and right.
