You didnโt have any responsibilities with respect to school, because it was over for the summer, and you didnโt have any adult concerns like paying taxes, getting a job, buying food. If you wanted to spend one day riding your bike to the other side of town just to check it out, you could easily do so. Then the next day you could wake up whenever you wanted, and then go out and play with BB guns in the forest with your friends, and when it got dark, you could go back to your place and play vidya or watch a movie and Alโs your mom to buy pizza for you.
You were beholden to nothing and no one, except for the natural constraints of being a kid with no car and no money.
As an adult, a day doesnโt go by where we can just do whatever we want whenever we want all day.
As a complete tangent, I think this is why anime always has high schoolers as the main characters. It communicates a sense of freedom just by them being young and not having lots of obligations and responsibilities.
