No, Mario has had wonky lore and backstory for ages, with a lot of contradictions. Mario games NEVER explained where the hell mario or Peach come from,d espite everyone eles being toads in the Mushroom kingdom. Makes sense for them, not the random humans.

Then you had the Donkey Kong games, which were in some kind of city which further complicates things.

Nintendo seems to be hellbent at reforming all this and clarifying. They made sure to everyone that Peach and Pauline are completely separate characters, and introduce New Donk City, a modern slick human cityscape.

Just odd that it comes out so soon, you'd expect a game of this nature to be like the holiday title...so maybe we are getting something even crazier later in the year, especially with Mario's 40th anniversary celebration soon.

No, as I said Miyamoto didn't think that hard about the backstory or how everything fit together. Mario is just Mario on an adventure, and he isn't going to rescue some mushroom mutant, he's going to rescue a proper lady princess. But then you ahve these two humans out of nowhere.

I think the new team for Oddyessy onwards is attempting to create a coherent backstory fore verything so it all fits together.

It's kind of weird, as Pokemon is also set for October. They could ride those sales through all of the holiday season, but I would still have expected a bigger release at that time. Exactly, that's the thing-none of the actual mainline games ever explicitly say “Brooklyn” except in ancillary material like manuals, cartoons, or interviews. The idea of Mario being from New York got super reinforced outside the games, especially with the Super Show and the SMB movie (the OG one, not the Illumination one). But in-game? It’s vibes-only.

Yoshi’s Island tried to shoehorn a baby origin, but it contradicts all that urban plumber lore. At this point, Nintendo treats canon like a suggestion-Mario just exists wherever and whenever they need him, and continuity is as flexible as his jump physics.
