If said 12 year old was given a Fire Emblem game that was itself 12 years old. That would put it at Fire Emblem 6. So nobody is going to know who the fuck any character older than Roy is. And that's an extreme example. More likely they'd only know Roy from Smash Bros. Who the fuck is Leif? What the fuck is a Sigurd? Didn't Shadow Dragon fucking bomb? Or is Marth also a Smash Bros character.
Claiming that the Emblems are a selling point always comes off as nonsense to me. Nintendo doesn't sell most of these games. Are they just admitting that everyone plays on emulator? How big of a subset is that audience compared to regular people who just bought the game? I don't think the Emblems being previous Fire Emblem heroes made any sense.
