The point is to have game companies ensure a game is playable in the event they stop supporting it and pull the plug on servers. All this means is the game needs to have some sort of playable offline state, and possibly the ability to do multiplayer with P2P connections instead of using a server. Server based online is a cancer anyway, plenty of great games did P2P just fine.
