Why do people on /v/ default to sales metrics or calling them a contrarian as a response when someone is either criticizing or disliking something they like?

Because the pointlessness of making "critique threads" to hellyache about games they don't like don't deserve any real conversation.

Consuming product is their personality. All their self-worth is tied to how good that product is doing.
If it is a financially successful product, that means they like the correct product.

Videogames is by definition brain-dead media consumption. There is no way around it no matter how you play videogames.

What is the ideal response? Surprising nobody, a robot NPC doesn't get why people won't dignify pointless "critique" with some sort of real heartfelt response

If I post player or sale stats it's usually because it's cathartic to see a game I don't like fail or a game I do like succeed. Not that I consider a game good or bad based on how it sells. But there are plenty of anons that do that unfortunately

Why? I think it depends on the game.

I don't see why you have exceptions. They're all electronic toys and basically consumable media.

It's either used to dismiss games and products that are clearly failing or used to dismiss obvious shitposters spouting false information.
There's no middle ground over here.

Fitting in. Humans are social creatures and have an innate desire to belong somewhere. Even if that makes them drooling retards. See mob mentality

Almost any critique where someone can enjoy the game despite the criticism which is most critique. It doesn't matter that Silent Hill has dog shit combat for example or Mario is piss easy.

Because you are almost certainly a contrarian.
You're arguing some game is bad for some dumb reason that isn't relevant to the players of the game. It's easy to dismiss these types of arguments with sales figures, awards, and critical response.
