not really, the most influential ones like Dragon Quest and the Souls series have pretty minimalistic stories
the ones with story focus like Xenoblade or Trails are more like outliers

I play the gameplay several times, experimenting with new strategies and doing challenge runs with extra restrictions

Map stuff like reinforcements popping out and fighting bosses are more memorable than shallow anime politics

If you were pairing units for no reason I wouldn't call it gameplay, but you specifically said eugenics. Eugenics is in Genealogy and Fates (and Awakening). You plan out the pairings to get the strongest soldiers and gather useful items.

Unironically it is because it is a Nintendo franchise. If you are picking up a Nintendo game, you understand that you aren't getting it for the narrative or to ask questions.

That's just wrong. Sure, 1-2 have...nothing, being the earliest examples of the genre. But most games past 3 have real storylines and character writing. V is something of a random events plot but it genuinely does not work as a game without the core narrative of growing up and raising a family.
