So I just playtested the new mainline Sonic game and honestly, while the gameplay was fun, everything else left me a bit mixed

I'm not gonna front: after Frontiers, this all sounds entirely believable. I can definitely believe the Sally expy if Ian's on the team or if there are some weird fanboy shenanigan politics going on at Sega that somehow led to this. Everything LITERALLY seems in line with what Frontiers did before, and I think they literally said they were doing Frontiers 2 anyway, so this is reasonably within expectations. Shadow gens is fine, but its mostly leveraging reused assets and concepts from the most liked 3D games in the series. But it was also apparently made by the B team who previously were doing the mario and sonic games. So I am still skeptical of what the "A" team can do.

I do, because Evan Stanley joined Sega last year as "Loremaster" or something, and also worked on Frontiers with Ian Flynn. But from what I know it was still Sonic Team on the JP side that dictated the story, so the only way Frontiers 2 would be a "true sequel" would be if the story undergoes the same process, and if the writer is the same.
But I can easily see this being a BotW to TotK situation but just like Ian Flynn wrote his fanon crap into Zelda Masterworks adding details that were tastefully left vague in Breath of the Wild and not officially endorsed, he too will take an incohesive Frontiers 2 script and fanon his way to make it superficially be an "ACHSHUALLY" sequel to Frontiers 1.

Yes, plenty of people like instant gratification with no real substance. And I'll even admit it's fun for the first few runs, but it gets old really quick because it lacks the real variance and engagement that simply building speed naturally via interacting with level design brings.

It's kept around because it's piss easy to develop for (when you're not making Unleashed style stages anyway) and lines up with what most people think they want from Sonic, which is "gotta go fast xDD" and it makes open world Sonic actually work when you can't/won't make real level design for it. They almost bucked it with Lost World but that flopped so they immediately went back to the boost formula after, which is a shame. Lost World had some good ideas with the parkour mechanic which kinda came back with Frontiers but that's probably more of a coincidence since Frontiers was obviously just ripping off the climbing mechanic from BoTW. I think the boost could work as a compliment to momentum based platforming in some way, but replacing it entirely with an instant fast button just dumbs down the gameplay too much for my tastes.

At any rate, I could go into the autistic nuances of this and that regarding the boost mechanic but the tl;dr is: Kids grew up on it and love it, and Sonic Team is very comfortable developing games around it now. It's not going anywhere any time soon.
