It was the perfect "all off the shelf" machine.
Perfect cheap CPU, perfect cheap GPU that works with cheap memory.
If the 3DO idea had any chance to succeed, it would be if it was the dreamcast, but manufactured by everyone.
However we don't live in that reality, we live on one where people believe in shit like console wars.

If you're interested in playing actual VIDEO GAMES then it doesn't get much better than the Dreamcast, maybe the Saturn is better if you count the JP exclusive games.

The Dreamcast was the final bridge between arcade games and home gaming. It had a bunch of arcade-perfect ports and a lot of games that still had things like scores and were focused on replayability but also started to introduce more long-form single player campaign style games.

The console only lost because it didn't have a lot of games, because they actually had an official strategy of "bangers only".
They only allowed bangers, so they really denied a lot of shovelware.

It wasn't the greatest but I really enjoyed playing games on it. I think N64 and PS2 games were a bit better overall. And my friend preferred the Xbox at the time. Or we just play on PC anyway

Sega was ultimately doomed once Sony was on the market. Unforced errors with the Saturn or not. The other manufacturers had to fight the cost and technology advantage that Sony's functionally lower cost to implement DVD gave them. The Dreamcast would have had a fair shake if it could play DVDs, and it would have probably gotten a revised controller partway through the generation as well, much like the transition from the original PlayStation controller to the Dual Analogue and DualShock.
Of course, that was never going to happen economically, because Sony were basically paying themselves for DVD capabilities whereas everyone else had to pay full price.

It was a massive leap in gaming. The graphics at the time were incredible and so was performance, OoT and Sonic Adventure launched about a month apart in Japan if I'm remembering correctly and OoT was 24FPS while SA1 was 60 FPS and it felt so smooth and clean in comparison. People will play SA1 now and think it's a bit janky but a game that looked and played that good back then was next level.

Then you had online play, the web browser, crossplay games with PC users, the memory cards that doubled as little gameboys/virtual pets, and most importantly a shit ton of games. I think the PS2 is the better console overall but the Dreamcast was really amazing when it was relevant, there was nothing else like it in the console market.

This. People forget just how wild it was to have that level of innovation packed into one console in '98/'99. The VMU alone felt like some futuristic sci-fi shit-playing mini-games, tracking health in Resident Evil, even having different screens for each game. The modem and web browser were straight-up witchcraft at the time. Plus, stuff like Phantasy Star Online was a legit game-changer.

Yeah, PS2 killed it, sure-but the Dreamcast felt like a console built for gamers by people who actually loved games. Its whole vibe was so unapologetically arcade-y and experimental. It wasn't just a console-it was a mood.

I have a ton of great memories with the dreamcast, xbox, wii, DS, 3DS and PSP just due to how easy it was to play pirated games. It's easy to call these consoles the GOAT because I played a huge chunk of their libraries.

I've had one for about 15 years

The amount of truly horrible games on the system you can count on two hands. It was Sega at their creative peak that they've never been able to recapture. But what will make or break your opinion of the console is whether or not you prefer Arcade-y type games or not. If you do, it's absolutely worth it and one of the greatest systems because of it

As someone who loved arcades, this was peak. Not only that, it had several good rpg games. But the cherry on top was playing quake 3 and PSO online.

It was pretty badass and didn't deserve its fate but it was only really alive for like 2 years. You had to kinda be there. If you just played Playstation til ps2 released then yeah you missed out. I was a Sega kid growing up though

No, wrong on both counts. Because you dont speak japanese so i know youre not plsying all the inport games for saturn and the dreamcast didnt have mgs, dmc, kh or silent hill. All it had was shenmue sonic adventure skies of arcadia taxi driver and soul cal and naomi fighting game ports, and even then it didnt have melty or ggxx

7/10 ahh system, too bad it didnt survive to the end of the gen but thats just reality. Died, so it doesnt have as impressive of a line up

It isnt better than the gcn either. Mario and zelda games mog everything the dc has. The dc is slightly better than the og xbox (which to be fair was a pretty good system)

whatif there were a console, that was so poorly designed, it used batteries that died all the time, it rrod often, was designed without fans or vents and overheated, the ui was non existent, it had crappy features, the console itself was hideous, but the games made for it were great?

I genuinely think it was the last true Japanese console. It felt like the last hurrah of a dying age back when Japanese electronics were cutting edge and did wacky incredible shit that no one else would think of. The PS2 is a better console because of the software but being real its so much more boring and played a big role in why games are so boring nowadays.

I didn't grow up with one so I don't know if I get a say in the matter, but it's an incredibly unique console both in hardware and software. I think it says a lot that the games people still talk about today like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, JSR, and Crazy Taxi all come from it, even if people didn't experience them there first

Kinda crazy how fucking insane the 6th gen was. Even the Xbox had some baller games. Probably the last time games were for people that actually played games. I'm not against "modern gaming" but you can tell t he vibe isn't the same.

Sega is still a major player. Yeah. They don't make hardware anymore (except if you count Game Gear Micro and Astro Mini actually being way fucking better than any mini console the other guys put out) but they still make games and theyre not suffering like almost every major publisher that isn't Nintendo.

For me it was playing Crazy Taxi, GTA2, Shemue, Tony Hawk 2, NBA/NFL2k1, Toy Commander, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Frogger, Sonic Adventure 1, and Sonic Shuffle on repeat.

I don't know about greatest console of all time but it's a rather interesting piece of hardware that's got some pretty cool arcade ports and really weird niche titles. I think it's more of an oddity than anything else and that's to be appreciated.

It's a pretty crazy point in the history in videogames.

There are for sure people who think it is. But that's not a very public opinion. I think the public opinion you are thinking off, is that the dreamcast was the last real gaming console. And THAT I think is true.

I think the next real gaming console will have voxels instead of polygons and AI filters/overlays. It will play classic games enhanced by AI to look like anything you like, super detailed smooth cartoon or smooth realistic graphics. No matter what game you play, you can choose what it looks like. Imagine street fighter 2 with smooth realistic animations but the original gameplay. That will be the next real gaming.

You know how much the graphic industry sucks? They are working on nonsense like raytracing and pushing polygons the size of voxels. The graphics industry is an absolute incompetent failure and the reason gaming sucks so much nowadays. What they needed to research is improving old games with ai filters. What they are researching is improving modern games with outdated methods. It's so braindead it's crazy....
