Is metroid better with a darker or lighter tone?

Atmospherically dark, but with lighter world-building and society. Keep the Federation conceptually comical (yes they get into morbid situations sometimes but they’re still the most basic space grunts ever) and keep the chozo how they are.

Dark and isolating but there should absolutely be the occasional badass bounty hunter heroism in the atmosphere somewhere. Samus ain't no bitch and that's an important thing to show.

Needs lighter moments like the animals in Super Metroid so it doesn't become opressively dark. Metroid is a game about HOPE

Imo Dread took it a bit too far, not with BirdDad (he was just a bit chuuni) but the murderbots are antithematic for Metroid. To borrow from /tg/ it's a Nobledark setting, there's pervasive horror elements and the universe frequently sucks. (see: Samus' backstory) BUT you are personally very powerful and resilient, and this allows you to at least sometimes prevail in ways that actually matter and change things for the better in a lasting way.
