roy is the most evocative of the batch if they're used as they've typically been, since they're all pretty zero dimensional tropes but "johnny bravo" at least has any sort of cultural valence at all compared to idiot, goofball x 2, moron, stale bread, and girl
"mad scientist" is 2nd on the list, but ludwig probably has the most potential if they tried making the koopalings serious characters for some reason - you can think of a game where he tries to take the plot more seriously than bowser does for instance, whereas roy can't really not be the goofiest guy in the room

ludwig would be a fun villain for a game starring bowser. jr, for instance

I hope the burnout of their overuse in the New Soup era doesn't keep them from coming back... They've got a lot of potential, if Nintendo can just stop making them watered down versions of their SMB3 fights.

I was thinking the other day that it'd be cool if they made a Mario Metroidvania set in Bowser's castle where you go around finding the Koopa Kids to unlock new methods of traversal.
Like Lemmy's ball lets you roll over environmental hazards or Wendy gives you access to shortcut pipes, stuff like that.

I like the Koopalings but it always feels like whenever you find someone who really likes them, it's usually the more autistic sort. Comes with the territory of liking unpopular characters I'm assuming. For Lemmy in particular, probably something about the colorful and "fun" design

The Koopalings aren't unpopular at all, they just don't have big dedicated fanbases. They're more quietly appreciated by normal people, their reveals for NSMBW and MK8 were extremely warm.

Regardless of whether it's SMB3, SMW, SMB3 cartoon or SMW cartoon, it always seems like Ludwig and Wendy were the best and had the most presence. Iggy in the cartoon seemed to constantly flux between idiot savant and idiot idiot.
Lemmy and Larry were always retarded and Morton and Roy weren't too far behind the stupid train.

Despite actually liking Super Mario Sunshine outside of the way they handled blue coins and how bullshit the 100% "reward" is, I really hate how Bowser Jr. replaced them near entirely outside of the rare inclusion in a NSMB game or the karts.
Miyamoto once again proving his hatred of lore is his own creation's downfall.

I don't dislike the Koopalings but I think there being 7 is a double-edge sword
They're a packaged deal
For Bowser Jr and Kamek you can have neither, either, or both and they have well defined relationships with Bowser as individuals.
Koopalings bounce well off each other (when given the chance) but when you have one in a game, you have to include the rest and they don't have chemistry as well defined with Bowser.

Splitting them up isn't necessarily an impossibility. If I remember right, the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style Mario books only used one or two Koopalings at a time and the old Valiant comics mostly used Lemmy or Wendy without the rest, while only one story featured them all. You could be right that the game devs consider them inseparable, but it seems a high cost to shelve them all in favorite of the blandest possible replacement.

I love Kamek's relationship with Bowser in SMRPG. Bowser's characterization in SMRPG in general is just fantastic and I hate they never really reused it. The camaraderie he has for his fellow troopas and even the good guys is just fantastic.
