we're only going back because we depend on indie devs, who lack the resources to produce those high fidelity graphics, for any semblance of good games.

Nintendo never chased high fidelity
if you've been paying attention you'll notice all their new games use the more powerful hardware for gameplay related shit instead of rendering skin pores

Studios thought "High fidelity graphics" meant games would just look good by default and that turned out to not be the case.
Turns out games look good when they look good, not just because they "look realistic".
