To smuggle a mushroom while also defending yourself from the more common red shells while in first feels pretty luck based. Ideally items that target other players should either be difficult or require a modicum of luck to dodge but have a fairly consistent dodging mechanic that doesn't involve cheesing the system.

Like if you hear someone firing a homing weapon at you there's a specific evasive action you can take. It might not work 100% of the time but if you recognize what's coming at you then as long as you know what the correct evasive action is then you should have a chance to avoid it consistently.

It's actually more balanced then you realize. Its not instant and takes time to take out riders far away. It has a large blast radius that can affect other riders (if im about to get wiped by a blue shell and I'm near someone I get as close as I can, ill even brake). They can also be blocked with the horn. The blue shell takes out anything in its path as it races towards the first place racer, technically anyone can be hit by it. And combined with other convenient last place items you can make up a serious gap

What's the trick to winning Knockout Tour? No matter how many times I try, I can never seem to get higher than 4th place. Even if I'm in 1st for the majority of the race (which feels like total luck based on not getting too fucked by items), toward the end of the final stretch suddenly there are lightning bolts and bullet bills and all these things flying out of nowhere that throw me way down the rankings and the top 3 so far ahead I can't even catch up with mushrooms. This is all single player, too. It just feels so unfair and random.

There's another way to do it, which is basically hang out in the back at the start of the race, catch up without using your items, then giga boost to first before the first checkpoint and frontrun as hard as possible. Always get Dash food and save it for when you get hit with a blue shell. The AI actually isn't nearly as adaptive as people say, you can frontrun for the entire race in single player.

Every item is visible trailing behind every kart, but there are so many times when I come up behind a CPU that has no items only for them to smack me with a shell or something the moment I pass despite there being no item boxes anywhere near.

I get the horn multiple times per race, compared to MK8 where I got it a handful of times over years of play. It's been made super common now. But I do agree that it ends up not being useful, saving it for a blue shell that never comes until after a lightning strike that takes away the horn anyway. 90% of the time I just give up and use the horn on red shells or just adjacent racers.

I literally saw the CPU do this during my last attempt at a Knockout Tour. I was in second place and then 2 bullet bills rocketed ahead of me in the last turn before the end and I got 4th place because of it.
