The drop in quality happens as soon as you beat the iron golem or whatever his name is.
Anor Londo looks cool and all, but it's one of the worst areas in all of these games. I also hated how the game sucked me in with the

and then just gave me a cutscene where I was taken to the mystical place that the game had been building up to.

It's a drop in momentum, not quality. Only Lost Izalith is a truly bad level.

all the areas the lordvessel unlocks are just flat planes with copy pasted enemies. they must have really been running out of time since they make you backtrack to a bunch of spots you have already been AND the new areas you unlock are unfinished

Are we still pretending that From has ever done a lava level as kino looking as Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith? The literal descent into hell they created has never been topped. Yes, its unfinished, but it has amazing atmosphere.

Anor londo is a worse boletaria dungeon. And the DES dungeon is literally a staircase

I will admit that the DeS tunnels in 2-2 are kino, but its such a small area its hard to call it a true lava level. DS2 Iron Keep is pretty bland. DS3 Smoldering Lake is also bland. I would honestly put Volcano Manor above both of them. I just think the DESCENT aspect of Demon ruins/ Lost Izalith elevates it a bit. The first time playing it Blighttown feels so far below, only for you to discover it descends even deeper. It gives Moria vibes. It doesn't entirely fulfill that feeling due to enemy copy paste and what not, but the skeleton of the level is superb in my opinion.

Fuck, now I want to replay all the games. Havn't touched a souls game since January. Which is a long time for me.

Those areas of Demon Ruins are pre-lordvessel.
The really shitty stuff on the way to Lost Izalith (and even Lost Izalith) are architecturally fine. They just have no interesting enemies or enemy placement.

Volcano manor I didn't like very much either. I think From leaves lava levels to the interns

It also does callback to Tower of Latria which is a better level. I liked the Maiden mechanics but the game never expands on that and there's also no reason to do the actual dungeon unless you're aiming for 100% achievements

Gameplay wise yes, as you get fast travel and its not as interconnected anymore. Besides izalith the other 3 areas are super kino, new Londo, seaths home and tomb of the giants. Still more immersing than any other fromsoft game.

I think it's all good except for demon ruins, izalith, and crystal cave. Plus the dlc by itself has at least three great areas. Personally I don't see why one would love blighttown while hating catacombs, or love sens but hate dukes. It's a good game all around minus the shitty lava part.

I barely play vidya lately, but DS1 is one of my go-to comfy games. I just like strapping on some armor and slaying bad guys with an axe or a claymore and Dark Souls makes it feel so good.
