This entire game did not make sense.
I do not understand how the story is praised so much, is it literally just because at one point you turn your DS upside down? That it?

I blew through this series in the span of like two-three weeks and really enjoyed it mostly. I definitely remember feeling somewhat let down by the direction of the last one in spite of the complex motivations.

Yeah I was kind of hoping that ZTD would kind of tie VLR and 999 together (wtf happened to snake/santa etc) but they blew their load with the whole radical 6 killed 6 grillion goyim on earth! bit.

it's *hardly* time travel, the "plot twist" is that you're playing as Akane in the past using her PSI to view branching paths of the future to find the one in which Junpei manages to correctly solve all the problems in the testing facility to survive the incinerator. VLR is the game that *actually* gets goofy with time travel (I still like it though)

idk ZTD was kind of boring to me, we're already fundamentally familiar with half the cast, luna and carlos are boring and the entire Q team is just annoying. The only interesting character was Delta who was kept out of 95% of the game for the purpose of being the deus ex machina. ZTD is just a rehash of VLR with zero of the inter-character drama and mystery which was what carried VLR

I never got why the AI somnium games couldn't have just re-used the whole "puzzle escape room" aspect of the zero escape games. You'd think it'd be even easier to justify it than VLR/ZTD because they don't need to work in some weird premise for forcing you to solve puzzles to progress
>uh yeah people subconsciously hide things in their minds, that's why their brains are escape rooms or something
the "puzzles" in the somnium files fucking suck

You're playing as Akane 9 years ago, looking through the morphogenetic field to find the one timeline where she survives. In the bad ending timelines, she disappears because of a time paradox meaning she couldn't have been there in the first place (the warning sign of this is her fever getting worse, because of the incinerator she died in). When she finds the right timeline, she's able to receive the answer to the sudoku puzzle from Junpei and escape the incinerator, completing the time loop and allowing the timeline where she survives to exist in the first place. Google 'bootstrap paradox'.

i'd find them much more tolerable if there just wasn't a time limit associated with them. as it is, you're at best just making somewhat educated guesses, and guessing wrong enough times just forces you to waste more time. it's a shame too, since there's some legitimately good banter between aiba and date if you deliberately pick some wrong options, but the fact that there's an actual negative consequence for it dissuades you from seeing them
Anonymous No.715544304 [Report] >>715544690 >>715545537 >>715546750 >>715549253
People love it but VLR is where the problems of the series started. 999 just uses the morph field to transmit information only across distance, time, and timelines which is why a lot of characters will bring up trivia that is relevant to the plot but that they don't know where they heard it. VLR changing that to be the transmitting of consciousness was a big tonal shift even without taking into account the millions of consciousnesses that get pushed out into bad timelines and are forced to suffer the consequences of choices they didn't make

He's named "Santa" because "san" is "3" in Japanese. Other characters also have different pseudonyms in Japanese. Ace is "Ichinomiya" ("ichi" = 1), Snake is "Nils" ("ni" = 2), Lotus is "Yashiro" ("ya" = 8), etc. I don't know why they decided to keep his name in particular.
Anonymous No.715546076 [Report]
>>715545863
chances are they kept Santa's because they couldn't figure out a three related name for it and Santa is already a name english speakers are familiar with.

I haven't played in a decade at this point but wasn't it the ship you're on is actually a recreation that has been set up as a perfect match so that Akane in the past can survive the original accident by copying you? I don't even remember VLR but for some reason I still feel like I enjoyed it more than 999.

The building copy of the ship already existed in the First Nonary Game. All the "transmitter" children were supposed to be in the building sending the solutions to their "receiver" siblings on the actual ship, but something went wrong and Akane ended up the ship with her brother. So she had to rely on future Junpei as the "transmitter" when trapped alone in the incinerator.

Sure, but it was still a great sequel. It should've ended there.
>millions of consciousnesses that get pushed out into bad timelines and are forced to suffer the consequences of choices they didn't make
That's what ZTD invented. You aren't playing as single Sigma jumping through timelines and switching places with your alternate selves. It's the player switching the timelines between all the different Sigmas across them. It like in 999 when Junpei remembers the code to the coffin only after you do the coffin ending first. There's no consciousness swapping of any kind.
The only instance of this in VLR is when old Sigma swaps with young Sigma in the past
I hated when in ZTD it suddenly everyone could do it even a total noob like Carlos
