You aren't playing as single Sigma jumping through timelines and switching places with your alternate selves. It's the player switching the timelines between all the different Sigmas across them. It like in 999 when Junpei remembers the code to the coffin only after you do the coffin ending first. There's no consciousness swapping of any kind.
The only instance of this in VLR is when old Sigma swaps with young Sigma in the past
