I fucking love this game, but I'd struggle to recommend it to other people, and am always surprised when I see new players enjoying it. Then again, I felt the same way about Dragon's Dogma, and /v/ gargles that game's balls, so maybe I'm just retarded and don't know what fun is.

From someone who played A LOT for the first 5 years or so of this game

What it does well:
Achievment system is very satisfying and extensive
World bosses and map metas are basically the best in the genre and basically the main reason to play this game. Raids were a big disappointment, as were dungeons. Fractals are okay because they have their own meta progression which was cool
Fashion/transmog system is really good, with fully functioning dye system, and plenty of chase items, limited items. The only depressing thing is the armour part, which isnt as extensive as the weapons part if you dont pay money
Mount system is great but I wouldnt play the game for the mount system
The PvP was a lot of fun while it was alive. WvW is meh and very repetitive

What it does poorly:
Gearing is just not a thing.
Buildcraft is just not a thing
You copy a build and thats it
The combat system isnt horrible but its not good either, its definitely below average. The way you get good at combat in this game is being tick perfect and timing your clicks in a very contrived way. The DPS difference beteen someone good and someoen bad at this is like 10x which is just ridiculous. Its basically like the RuneScape 3 combat system.
Way too much convenience stuff in the MTX store. Unlimited foraging tools should not be a paid service. And there should not be a difference in speed at how fast you forage stuff based on which skin you're using (???) absolutely ridiculous.
The LFG system is so bad. Theres a reason map metas were the most popular thing in the game and raids were DOA.
Dumb story
For the most part cringe and dumb devs. I still havent forgotten how they treated Kripp all those years ago. It really set the stage for the game in the worst way possible and in hindsight, it was obvious where the game was gonna go

If they make GW3 i really hope they seriously reconsider a lot of these decisions in GW2 but keep a lot the things that made it special,

I recently replayed all the GW1 expansions on a new character for the 20th anniversary.
It is worth getting into gw2 just to revisit Tyria and see how the old places have changed from a different perspective or nah? And do you have to buy all the expansions, is stuff locked behind story/grinds, is it solo friendly or how does it work? I agree with you the LW episodes inbetween expansions were not that great for the perception of tha game, even though between HoTs and PoF we got a wing 4 with Bloodstone Fen and PoF and EoD we got W5 and W6, but the thing is anet has a really good system of providing api keys to players and gathering information on player data. I believe the guy responsible in the company for conveying that data accurately fucked up majorly to giving anet correct information on what people really wanted, because raids were all the craze back then.

Guild Wards 2 is shit, it has always been shit when it decided to go from comfy co-op mmolite to full on MMO. It decided everything needed to be balanced and the fun builds of GW1 were left behind. The game also gets next to no updates anymore I don't even understand why people continue to play the game honestly.

I didn't stay until the first expansion, but leveling was fun. It was a comfy PvE experience.
My main problem was coming from GW1 that the PvP didn't really match up. GW1 was fun because you had to get creative with the limitations, you figured out what kind of player you were up against, but in GW2 it felt like nothing mattered. Everyone had a hundred traits and slot skills and weapons to swap out at anytime, so what are you even playing against. It never felt like there was any strategy involved, just spam your shit until people die.

Has 4chan ever talked about this game? You would think GW1 was some kind of mega-hit and GW2 was DoA if you went by /v/ discussion but 2 outsold 1 by almost 3x and has outlived it by over a decade. After ESO was confirmed dead its probably going to lead to GW3 being the only MMO that actually releases in the next decade too, which will probably also completely outsell GW1.

This is such a weird choice. Mesmers are basically wizards who specialized in enchantment and illusion schools, with some empath shit thrown in. Bard seems like it would make more sense as a Thief specialization. I suppose they want to lean more into that thespian element Mesmer has always had going on in the background.

People are weird about it. There's 10 year old grudges because the game isn't like GW1, was portrayed for being different and had beta tests showing it was different but you still had people annoyed on launch day that they were swindled for a different game.
The time between release and the first expansion was so drawn out that the game was lucky not to have died, it ended with a mary-sue being killed and a lesbian kiss. The writer of that character and the salad race left shortly after but you still get her brought up as if it's a current storyline.
