Brawl had nothing to do with it.

Any game with crossovers has some level of duty to be faithful (yeah, yeah, we all know they fail at it sometimes but that's what reinterpretation is). The simple fact is Ridley in every iteration except for the very first Metroid on NES, is this giant room filling boss and his sheer size is a massive part of who he is. A Ridley boss fight in Metroid at this point almost NEEDS to make you feel claustrophobic because the idea that he's a room filling massive fucking space dragon is baked into the design of most of his fights.

Unlike Bowser he doesn't have a history of vastly changing size either. Again, since Super onwards he has always been this huge room filling monster.

Making him playable while still retaining that is a struggle. So when deciding things and planning them out, it was likely a legitimate discussion of "do we think we can do him justice without compromising on how important his size is" and that's a legitimate question that they likely ruled him out early for.

Also Smash picks aren't about who is "interesting". None of the Mario cast are "interesting". It's about who is fun, cool or would make people happy.

I think they did a great job personally. The lankiness isn't completely uncharacteristic for him, lots of his appearances across Metroid put a lot of emphasis in his extremely thin neck and arms. Coupled with good posing work I think they sold him as a big imposing guy as best as you reasonably could without just making him literally be a physically bigger presence.

It feels to me like their direct inspiration for Smash Ridley was xenomorphs, which Ridley already has obviously adjacency too, and since xenomorphs are much closer to human size than he is, I think that was a good angle.

I could write a fucking essay on why Dark Samus feels off though, but at the end of the day she was always a cheap free inclusion through the echo thing anyway.

Banjo is unquestionably, undeniably, by a fucking ocean of difference, the worst DLC character. He has lots of borrowed moves, compared to the mostly unique movesets of other DLC characters. Banjo has no unique mechanics. His "gimmick" is 5 uses of a mediocre side special per stock, compared to snorting a line of crack and becoming superman every single stock.
It would be completely in character for Ridley to be made bad on purpose, because Sakurai didn't want him, but felt his arm twisted over it.

If you land Ridley's dair with the base of his feet, you can press a button to convert it into a command grab that you can angle either left or right, and throws the opponent horizontally. Something tells me that Kraid will be in Metroid Prime 4 as a primary antagonist (alongside Sylux and perhaps another space prirate or if the Ing returns somehow). Ridley will likely not be in that game at all, especially since Metroid Dread lacked Ridley (mainly due to complaints that Ridley was shoehorned into Metroid Samus Returns when he wasn't in the original and had no bearing on the plot, while he was in Metroid Prime 1 (where Kraid was cut) and 3 (where he just felt like filler)).
