There's a good YouTube series of an alleged localizer/translator streaming his reaction to the Japanese dub of XC3 with the English localized subs. NoA and 8-4 both worked on that game, where NoE did the other XB games, and NoA can punch dialogue up quite a bit, which I do not consider inherently bad if the meaning is retained. But that cringey (imagine using that word) fanfiction claim is the typical exaggeration you see from the so-called critics. It's likely the exception and not the rule. Not that it's above criticism when it does happen however.
