At what point in time can you pinpoint gaming going from a niche hobby for nerds into something sterile, homogenized and corporate?

In the 60s vidya was exclusively for nerds. You had to be a student at an elite university to even access a computer, and a giant dork to even think about programming or running games on one. Then Pong cabinets let any idiot in a bar play a video game.

For me it will always be this. And I don't mention Mass Effect 2 for a reason. I know it was "the start" of it, but ME2 is kino. When I played the first hour of Mass Effect 3 everything already felt overly "trendy" in a way I can't stand, and like "did the same people even make this game" came to my head multiple times. It feels generic in a way ME2 didn't.

The transition happened in the ps2 era basically. Most people bought the ps2 as a dvd player so you had a bunch of normalfags bandwagon hop into the hobby hence the sudden explosions of drivers and sportslop, gta, frat core shooters and sort of shit. Millenials do not want to admit it because it was still a good era for games, possibly the best admittedly so theyd rather pretend it was the ps3 era (which americans prefer to call the 360 era, to the chagrin of literally everyone else)

Seventh gen.

Even in its earlier years it was becoming glaringly obvious that games were losing a lot of their creativity and having a lot of money thrown at them to push out product after product to cast the widest net for the biggest return investment possible. Of course money has always been at stake, but that's when the disconnect really started to occur.

>Most people bought the ps2 as a dvd player
Doubt. I think it would be better to say that some people may have opted to not buy an actual dvd player since the ps2 could play games, but also dvd's (though anyone who owned a fat can tell you it was a shit player anyway)

nta but in the years 2000-2001, the PS2 was basically the DVD player of choice for movie enthusiasts. its price was comparable to standalone DVD players (excluding the ultra shitty chink ones that no movie enthusiast would have considered anyway) and PS2 was known to have a decent build quality, which was absolutely not a guarantee when buying early DVD players, even from known brands. the fact that the PS2 could play video games, too, was just gravy. we could argue over what share of early PS2 sales was from people who wanted it for the DVD player more than the video games, but it is undeniable that there were people who bought a PS2 for its ability to play DVDs.

Honestly, I think "review score" culture of the time is partly to blame. In retrospect, giving games scores for their graphics was childish and did way more harm than good to the industry. We never needed games to compete with each other in that way and forcing that narrative killed a lot of them.

Sixth generation.
That's when focus shifted squarely to consoles and the only players in the console business became gigantic corporations- Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony.
Anyone saying seventh gen is missing that that was an extension of attitudes and behaviours of the sixth gen.

Gen x here.
For me it was when the PS2 came out.
-Sega were failing.
-People were turning enmasse against "arcadey" games
-Journos were rating down games for not having enough story
-The jock/douchebag clerks in game stores would laugh at me when i asked if they had any DC games
-I noticed people who previously thought video games were gay and stupid were now starting to play them because they were becoming more like movies etc
-Japanese studios were starting to disappear

It was a horrible time. I finally had disposable income to purchase consoles i wanted (i bought a GBA, Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube) But the quality of games was falling off a cliff and the industry was clearly heading downhill.

Quite literally 7th gen is when that transition happened. Naughty Dog there for example was still a company making platformer/action/adventure games then moved onto making movie games like Uncharted. But my personal example was that the death of the stealth genre died into 7th gen. We never got another Splinter Cell that truly mattered, MGS4 fucking sucked and Thief disappeared off the map after the closing down of Looking Glass Studios. Even during Ion Storm we got a Thief game, but none for that gen.

typo.

And when you really think about it, even one of the longer running series, Hitman got a kind of a dud game in the series with Absolution. Blood Money was released at the tail end of 6th gen to 7th so i still class it as 6th gen.

i don't remember this obsession with normalfags ruining shit when i was a kid in the 90's. You fags just have a retarded complex and most of the aruguements are just schizoid insinuations of causal relationships rather than actual value judgements

It's like you turn the act of consumption media into the point itself which ironically is a very normalfag thing to do

Plus it's all retrospective. This wasn't the kind of conversation anyone was having back then. It's literally just 4chan anons (and probably late joiners at that) appropriating nerd culture as a whole and acting as an arbiter of it which just gets exponentially more retarded as time goes on plus you fags never stop trying to one up another with the most retarded takes

Nailed it. Xbox premiered the brown and gray everywhere, Snoy had the PS3 built with arcane magic so things had to be tinkered to work on it and had way too much bloom (while heavily promoting photorealism and distancing itself from its older cartoony IPs), and Nintendo opened the floodgates to even more casual people forcing the raising of the buy & sell standard bar.
If anyone think the current state of the gaming industry is a pile of retarded people running around like chickens without a head, it has been like this for a very long while.

Throw more meaningless buzz words at me tranny.
There are less games now but more people buying them. This has had a devastating effect on the quality and quantity of games being released as well as the variety of genres.
More people own NBA 2k24 than had a dreamcast. Games no one has ever heard of or played like Black Myth: Wukong have sold more copies than mainstream games from the nineties like Tekken 3 or Goldeneye 007

GTA V has sold about twelve times as many copies as GTA Vice City. Two hundred million normoids with the blandest, boring taste in games appearing out of thin air in the last decade or two and now the entire industry chases them

Lol I think that was actually a glitch if you didn't reach that point without having aquired some weapon from another side mission beforehand, you literally couldn't escape because of the auto save and had to redo the entire game.

After the success of the Wii, when like old people were playing it, and around the time Minecraft was released. I want to say late 00s, early 10s.

When the (good) gaming magazines stopped publishing and English majors who were bad at video games became video game "journalists" online.

early 7th gen
thats when a bunch of outside suits and investors descended upon legacy studios and publishers and made sweeping hostile takeovers
whats worse is that none of these fuckers had a smidge of genuine interest or enthusiasm about gaming
most of them dont even have passing knowledge about video games
they saw an up and coming medium ready to be seized
since then they have destroyed many internal studio cultures and identities these had established
most legacy studios now are glorified ships of theseus with barely any of the original developers in house

3 to 22 isn't very precise culturally. Things 5 years apart can look totally different culturally.
