You could throw away your smartphone and actually learn and remember everything you need like in ye old times. But even the shittiest jobs now require you to have a smartphone. Cyberware is just a logical continuation of the trend of enhancements.

Cyberpunk deals with this somewhat. The mercs, runners etc. operate on a rule of cool. To them its not about efficiency and success but going out in a blaze of glory and looking good while doing it. Getting chromed up adds to that but is also a necessity for any merc to get anywhere.
