>pso1trudge in the aftermath of the disappearances of colonists, while quest givers point you around for fetch or kill quests and occasionally go down with you. there's depths here, but it's buried in a card game story episode, and everything else is mostly data logs and incidental dialogue as you progress.
>universemystery monsters attack the system, fight them with the real power of teamwork, the story got more complex with its episodes/portable entries like some political fuckery obstructing the heroes, but it was pretty stock anime with a sci-fi flavor. universe has proper cutscenes with cheesy bad dubbing, portable games are mostly VN-style portraits.
>pso2ironically not that different on paper from universe at first, but eventually it just sorta shoots off into batshit anime territory to the umpteenth degree. fully acted out for many scenes, some scenes in later episodes are character models talking over a background behind them. a lot to unpack but it uh, gets controversial with the fans for its tone changes and shifts in direction to say the least. there's a lot here, but it's stuck on a rather maintenance mode'd game and the graphics all look worse now.
>pso2ngsdon't, just don't bother. there is a story here that's acted out and all, but it's so low effort, so bare-bones, so hackneyed because they explicitly wanted to make a minimal designed story so players get into the already-scarce content. they're doing plot hooks to pso2 in the past year, but there's barely anything here. i'd say it's not worth the time investment but the grind is so utterly bonkers accelerated that it wouldn't even take long to complete, so it's really just "who gives a shit".
