FE8's gameplay mechanics in a vacuum are exactly as complex as the other GBA games. Just because it dangles some keys in front of you with useless promotion branches or overwold battles that trivialize an already easy game even further, doesn't mean any of it is of any substance. Except it means your decisions matter even less because the game is easy enough as is. You need at least some degree of difficulty for these ""complex"" gameplay mechanics to actually mean anything. But FE8 has the smallest cast of all the GBA games, lowest map count by a good amount, and by far the lowest difficulty. By any reasonable metric it is a less complex game than the two that came before it.

The FE7 relays were consistently sabotaged by scrimblofags. Using them as a data point isn't saying much.

It's understandable why people want to grind out units. It's a rpg game after all and part of the appeal is seeing playable characters get stronger. The problem is that I never liked how a lot of the "getting stronger" part relies on rng.

Conquest was sabotaged, yes. It's probably genuinely too difficult for an open relay format. It issue isn't too much grind, but more the problem the lategame - and especially endgame - presents. It's so intense that it warps the entire game around it from Chapter 1 and any participant going off script can have catastrophic effects on the success of the run. Bad actors took advantage of this to ensure it's forever fucked.

Ironically Thracia 776, the "unwinnable" game, was completed twice because the game is actually very well balanced for ironman and a relay format.

It's pretty easy to beat, plus it's skippable if you still aren't confident. The point of doing that gaiden is going for the money village, but suggesting that this village is important also implies that the Silver Card is valuable.
You lose a lot from losing either Marcus or Matthew, but I'd say Matthew is more important since he's 100% irreplacable until you get Legault who's also not an easy recruitment in the first place.

I know how to beat it and I did in fact get the run past it before anyone else (with Marcus as a key player). But it's just a fact, most people in a relay will fuck up basic-seeming things. A Marcusless run is doomed. You're never getting Priscilla, that's for sure. We barely could WITH Marcus. That means no Raven, which means no Lucius. I could go on and on about the domino effect it realistically has on the run.
A Matthewless run is ultimately salvageable. You're just a poorfag, not literally crippled. Big whoop.

Some DS games get there too, but I feel like late GBA was the era when the best spritework was being put into games. Working within limitations like that to produce games that still looked great was underappreciated at the time.

Compare GBA Advance Wars to the "remake" on the switch. The GBA/DS games are unironically easier to read the state of the map despite being what, 16x16px per tile?
