It's like a 7/10 soulslike, but one of the most enjoyable soulslikes I've ever played.
The main gimmick is pretty neat, with you having a "spirit" bar that goes up if you do damage and goes down if you take damage.
You do more damage the higher this bar is and spells consume this bar. If the bar goes to 0, you get stunned.
The environments are alright, but are very apocalyptic. Enemy design doesn't really vary a lot and you will fall to your death many times.
Story is surprisingly alright and it has some kino (and one bullshit) fights. Also you can play through most of the game equipped with just a pipe.

If you're looking for a top-tier soulslike game, go play Nine Sols. It's 2D, but it's in my top 3 favorite games of all time:

Automata doesn't really explain what was ACTUALLY going on with project yorha (or rather the ultimate "why" of it) and the entirety of the red girl stuff and machine network isn't really gone into. That story exists, I just had to ready a bunch of side material to get the actual answers since the game just blue balled me on it.

The part that really frustrated me was how big of a wet fart the reveal of what's actually going on with 2B's mood swings was, A2 just kinda says it and there's zero fanfare around it. It's a huge element of the story and I feel like it should have had some kind of cinematic to go with it like Replicant's ending B, or really just anything to properly emphasis how tragic it is and illustrate how long it's been going on.

If that's referring to the first part, no, the game does not actually tell you these things. How much important story exists in external media is one of the biggest criticisms of taro's stuff and automata is easily the worst offender for it.

If it's the referring to the second part, you have absolutely no clue how proper writing works. Imagine If Replicant B just had Kaine go "oh yeah it wasn't you in the supermarket btw" in unvoiced text and then it just immediately goes right to the C/D option with no cinematic or credits or anything. It is separate stories, however the actions of the first game directly create the state of the world that Automata ultimately ends up taking place in. Automata has a lot of little hints for people who played the first game to pick up on too, and the project gestalt logs you find in Automata fill in a bit more of the blanks of the first game's backstory as well.

I also think Replicant is a much better and more coherent story and in general the characters are more identifiable too. I played Replicant first and I was expecting Automata to make me feel the same way Replicant did but it just didn't for me.

If you play it though, it's probably good to go in knowing what happens in Drakengard ending E and some of the setup between that and Replicant. If you're interested I can give you a summary of the stuff you're "supposed" to know via Drakengard and the little bits of pre-story that came out before the game did without actually spoiling anything
