Overrated series. It starts out funny and becomes increasingly unfunny and passive aggressive. The final episode is actually embarrassing. Putting on makeup to make it look like he has been crying and sperging out about "WHATS A PALADIN" every 5 minutes. Not to mention he clearly followed a walkthrough for all of the games anyways.
His riffs on Phantasmagoria 2 and Ripper are the best things he did, along with some random episodes of Counter Monkey when he was actually telling stories and not just making shit up. Spoony has, frankly, always been overrated and his main claim to fame was being a little bit more charismatic than all the other retards with a camera in the early 2010s.

PS. He is also one of the people who helped to kickstart the JAPANESE GAMES ARE LE BAD movement among every reviewer at the time, as if modern Western games were any good. The 7th generation was one of the worst console generations of all time for East and West.

Retarded take. Both East and West have had incredible games over the years. The 7th generation was a low point for both areas. You had some mediocre JRPGs and attempts to "westernize" Japanese games, and then the West was exclusively obsessed with making brown and bloom FPS and TPS games. It was a dark time.

>FF13 was bad
It had plenty of issues. The problem with the game is predominantly that it has a fucking autobattle feature that is actually perfectly serviceable for like 30-40% of the game, then becomes a bit of a liability, but you really only have to actually make use of what is a pretty good combat system for like the last 30% of the game. That is not good game design. In retrospect the "linear" level design is not nearly a big deal as people thought considering how bland open world games are nowadays. Lightning is a pretty boring protagonist who gets outshined by the supporting cast. The story is general FF mindfuckery. All in all, it was a very mixed experience but I'd rather play FF13 over, I dunno, Medal of Honor Warfighter or whatever the attempted modern reboot of Medal of Honor was called.

More so his reviews of FF8 and FF10 are incredibly disingenuous. They have some funny parts to them, but they're just generic and boring criticisms leveled at every JRPG.

It amounts to two things.
1. They were all kind of trying to be creatives. More so than AVGN, Doug Walker was a guy who fancied himself a "film maker" and he really shaped these kind of things.
2. It was the style at the time.

Aside from any specific creative ambitions, making a sincere critical breakdown that's also entertaining is very hard skill to develop, and splicing in a bunch of skits about fighting your evil twin is an easy way to punch up the video without relying on that skill.

They're pretty important games but just massively outdated at this point. They are largely responsible for RPGs as a whole and so it is likely your favorite games can be traced back to Ultima in some capacity, but at this point the games are generally kind of clunky, unfun, cryptic, and lack features that you'd see in anything remotely resembling a modern game.
They also do have an interesting story, world, and development history.

desu I think he goes a bit too far in the opposite direction and winds up being overly reverential. Like it's pretty self-evident that Garriott came up with the whole setting of Brittania when he was still a dumbass teenager who had never read a book without a dragon or a spaceship on the cover, and his attempt to move away from that in Ultima 4 is appropriately clumsy and awkward, but the Majuular videos don't really dissect that and instead just treat it with breathless reverence. If you want to analyze Ultima fully and honestly you kind of have to be unkind about a lot of it, and he doesn't seem prepared to do that.

I'm old enough to have been around for when middle-late Ultima was new and I still never liked them and they felt as bad back then as they do now. Ultima likers were odd ren faire kinda people. This is not a general dislike of CRPGs or turnbased games or whatever either; I like Might and Magic and other games that seem similar but are just more fun. Ultima has always a weird appeal, just back then if you appealed to a few hundred thousand weirdos you were a huge hit.
