Playing halo, return to castle wolfenstein/enemy territory, counterstrike with custom skins, quake 3 arena (probably instagib servers at this point), bf1942 (possibly with desert combat mod), call of duty. I was in a clan for 1942 and cod on separate occasions and participated in a bunch of fun scrims. I was an fps boi for sure. I recall Starcraft custom games, dungeon keeper 2, not sure what else I killed time on in PC.

I probably still played my vast ps1 games on burned discs for more variety in genre. Megaman x4, crash bandicoot 3, metal gear solid, Spyro the dragon, ff8, can't think what else I played that year, but man it was a great time for vidya.

Making x number of friends required to progress is the worse mechanic Sims ever came up with. Also (if we're talking late summer) Tron 2.0 just came out. Summer 2003. I am 10 years old. I started emulating and playing ROM hacks since I was 8, and I was deep into it by 2003.
It's also the year I became a Sonic fan (which I still am) after replaying Sonic 3 on an emulator for the first time.
It was also the time when my classmate started coming over literally every day for the whole day for summer, but he mostly watched me play (I did offer for him to play, but he was more interested in my beating games). It was also the year I had a surgery that changed my whole life and I've spent many years somewhat recovering from.

I was 10yo and it was the last summer I have spent with my grandmother (because in early 2004 she and her old friend were hit by drunk driver while crossing the road - her friend survived, she didn't).
On laptop I was playing Spanking Runners (fuck the bosses in that game) and Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (I had no guide available so it took me like 10 playthroughs to find all 300 mudokons) along with my brother.
On PS1 I was playing Legend of Mana (another game where I had no guide and had to do many playthroughs - I clearly remember reaching Bejeweled City for the first time on like 6th or 7th playthrough), Xenogears, Azure Dreams, Chocobo Racing and Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2. I think I also played Discworld Noir that summer.

My dad had passed away unexpectedly in February of that year, and I got a PS2 and Kingdom Hearts at the beginning of that summer as a high school graduation present. I'd get lost in that game for hours, even playing it right through the night a few times. It helped me cope with the terrible grief I had over my dad's death because it made me forget about my pain and sadness, and was the only thing that made me happy at the time. By the end of that summer, I knew every nook, cranny, and secret of that game from beginning to end.

I have a really hard time enjoying anything from after that era. I keep trying to play something "new" and nothing ever gets my attention aside from, and I'm being honest here, not trying to be a patrician, Fallout 4 and Skyrim. And fuck, by this point they're nowhere near "new" games either, are they?
Gaming is my main pastime and I still spend most of it in Civ3, Tetris Attack, Mario 64, Streets of Rage 3, Medieval Total War and Vice City. The other day I grabbed Civ5 on sale and made it 90 minutes before I couldn't bear how it felt like a casualized children's game, and I've heard later installments are worse

I'm afraid whatever the fuck is wrong with me is genetic because my uncle is this retired boomer mechanic who has zero interest in video games except for Pac-Man which he has a bizarre mastery of. I'm not saying he plays it 24/7 or anything but I wonder how he's wired that he somehow really enjoys that yet cannot hold interest in any other video game in the world
