Honestly, I had a massive interest in playing SMT games again after a while of not playing them but I completely lost any interest in playing persona games past 3. It’s specifically the shift away from focus occultism and jungian psychology that makes these games just meh, persona 4 at least has a good focus on Shinto religion but a lot of that is by the wayside and it’s too upbeat. Like if I want a fix for slice of life stuff I could go to literally anywhere else


After a while, the most appealing thing that sticks about the Megaten games are the spiritual themes

Agreed. Persona was darker before and now it's like a comic book with super heroes. 3 was my first entry into the series and it's my favorite. The aesthetic from 1 through 3 was noir. 4 was on the fence. 5 is just too bright and loud.

There's a PSX version and a PSP version of P1, P2:IS, and P2:EP. The PSP versions are mostly the better way to play (some people debate it with P2:IS). Also you need to play a fan patch of P2:EP to play the PSP version in English because Atlus USA is retarded

The PSP version is okay, but they lowered the difficulty and made the battle system really slow. I've never played the PSX version with the fan translation but it's probably fine too.

Well persona is so far removed from it's SMT roots that the SMT subtitle basically got dropped.
There also was a shift in tone after 3 from darker too much more lighthearted, and even bombastic with 5.

To be fair the titles and subtitles in Megaten never made any sense. At best they're massively inconsistent. Persona was "Megami Ibunroku", and then that got dropped in P2. Devil Survivor 1 was also a "Megami Ibunroku" game but for some reason Devil Survivor 2 isn't. For some reason If... and Strange Journey and Nine and even Devil Chldren are full-blown "Shin Megamis" instead of Megami Ibunroku for reasons that aren't clear. Then obviously there's a whole bunch of games that are "megaten" but have neither subtitle like Digital Devil Saga and the Devil Summoners (which also have a weird thing going on where the Devil Summoner subtitle started getting dropped too)

And this is without going into the fact that the English names may or may not include the Shin Megami Tensei subtitle even when the Japanese name didn't.

Yeah. I like P1/P2 also but I think the gameplay across the 3 games is pretty bad. P2's gameplay is actually even worse than P1's I think. P2 combat is just so braindead. But I love P2's rumor system and its inexplicable deep dive into Lovecraft lore and other things. It's tempting to say "play these maybe if you like oldschool RPGs" but really their gameplay is worse than other oldschool RPGs, even the other oldschool SMTs.

I enjoyed Persona 2, the characters and story are charming and interesting, while the JRPG gameplay is fine. I wonder if they could adapt it to have the P3 calendar system in a remake. After P4 and P5 get remade and P6 gets milked to death, maybe we'll see a P1 and P2 remake. I agree with OP, the occult themes are what sets SMT apart, and they should lean into it more, instead of just using it in superficial ways, but I doubt nu-Atlus will.

For the most part it's games I like most of the time, since if I'm genuinely bored for more than a short time I drop the game. A good example is Metal Max 3, which has a lot of bad filler content and stuff that's possibly bugged like an area where there's literally another random encounter every step and it takes 15 minutes to cross a zone that's the size of a typical RPG starting town. But I still really love the series and parts of 3.

But eternal punishment was just too much boredom after innocent sin was really pushing it already.

I definitely like the Gekkoukan uniforms the most desu. They have this very classy and timeless aesthetic to them thanks to black and white color motive. Makes them look like classic opera uniforms while also having this intresting semi biker feel to them with the side zippers. The logo of the school also makes them look like racing suits a little bit. Overall very simple yet also very unique and interesting fashion style
