>>715623503 (OP)Psychonauts shows how little we have explored interesting game genre mixes. Psychonauts is like part point and click adventure, part 3D platformer, with the tiniest bit of RPG DNA. By that virtue, it's quite unique.
You get the interactivity and focus on story from an adventure game, something wholly lacking from all other platformers. You even have town / hub areas with NPCs to interact with, dialogue options and things to upgrade which feels almost a bit like an RPG. Then the levels are obviously full of platforming challenges. Each aspect brings the other parts upward, making it a more interesting game.
As navigating a 3D space is sort of core to all 3D video games, I consider the 3D platformer to be sort of the basis of what makes any 3D game fun... we should start by having fun movement! By making any game a platformer, it becomes more interesting. Because all humans love climbing shit and collecting shit.
Take the Witcher 3: where the world is just a series of dull terrain maps with buildings slapped on them, most of them copy pasted with nothing but junk loot to find, have zero verticality and zero joy to movement. But take the Witcher 3 world with fun moving / climbing mechanics and suddenly you have to design for verticality and your world is instantly more intriguing and worth exploring. Assassins Creed has figured this out, which is why despite their shit shallow gameplay and writing, they sell millions and are overall pretty fun games.
I'd like to see more genre fusions with 3D platformers. I think we've missed out on a lot of fun and cool game ideas with so much focus on hyper realistic settings and game experiences that would make double jumping and wall jumping nonsensical.
