That up there is basically Terraria's development process. Redditgit accidentally got one massive success and now he keeps tinkering with it because this is the only good thing he's ever made or will make and he can't let go of it.

I have beaten terraria 3 times and and never even interacted with the shimmer. Yes. I'm extremely good at game design and there are numerous indie games that have implemented my well thought out feedback. Unfortunately we don't live in fantasy land where people get to do what they're good at. I don't have the desire to be a one-man devteam coding and drawing and making music and shit, and I don't have any desire to hire developers for a studio.

the game needed more world exploration to continue into hardmode but they're seemingly unwilling to drastically alter it so the majority of the game is just a boss rush with increasing amounts of redundant and unfinished content being added every two years

Content bloat with no clear direction, and Regidit's anti-fun policy.
Hardmode was never good. Pre-hardmode can be a great experience exploring the world, working your way up loot, and discovering what little quirks your world has. After you defeat WoF, the world gets infested with enemies that can instakill you and the gameplay loop is reduced to a boss rush and farming.
Expert mode was peak terraria, and then Master mode was just pure bloat.
Every update Red's been adding since 1.2 has been nothing but pure bloat.

I also hate EoL simply because terraria doesn't work as a bullet hell, and it should've never been one.

the reaver shark nerf, meteorite nerf, so on and so forth changes were really regressive imo and kille both the replay value and luster of the reward from engagement with the various means available to approach the game, both from a progression based combat gameplay approach and as a comfy building sandbox. i feel like the only tolerable one amongst the changes was the crate split. though im one of those apparently rare kind of players who quite liked the initial implementation of torch luck

It's not a sandbox, though. Each stage of the game has a set goal that leads you towards a final boss where credits roll, and the devs actually put thought into game progression beyond shitting assets onto a plate and telling the player "Here, play with it retard."

I will stand by the idea that terraria is about progression and bosses first with everything else coming second. So many design decisions seem odd if you look at the game from a sandbox perspective ignoring the various nerfs they did.

Comparatively, the only thing I can think of that's locked behind bosses in minecraft is items exclusive to the outer end islands and beacons.

Torch luck, the happiness and pylon systems were all clear signs that Red et al were completely out of touch with how the overwhelming majority of people had been playing their game for the better part of a decade and were not afraid to impose how THEY felt you should be playing it. Panic undoing torch luck because of the extreme blowback couldn't undo the permanent damage; any update from that point forward risked ruining the game because they were too shortsighted to fully pivot to Terraria 2 after 1.3 instead of continuing to update an already overripe game.

its a very good game but it has spiraled a little to far out, not in a way that ruins what already existed, but what was made is just kind of mediocre.
The original base game was solid, the three bosses, the dungeon, all great, a little sparse, but all great.
then with hard mode ad the additions there, it was a good level of increase, needed some cleaning up to smooth it out (which it got) and has been great, the jungle stuff with planetera and the temple with the golem are pretty cool and served as a nice final bit of the game alongisde lots of the raid events and it felt like a good open ended post game.

then the lunatic cultist and moonlord stuff and it was kind of like not great...
