It's more of a colony building storyteller with a scifi western vibe, but you do end up defending your colony quite a lot.
It's pretty close to Dwarf Fortress except way easier to get into properly and with more.. I guess you could say refined elements.
There's also a lot of moving about, especially with the new DLC.
I'd say you can get a pretty good hang of the game in a couple of hours and see if it's for you, if you do end up liking it prepare to waste way more time than that on the first sitting.

My point is that it's just fundamentally inefficient. The amount of floor space for every to get their own house and AC, for example. Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress are very communist games. It never makes any actual sense to give people their own nice shit. Just beat it, the ending is meh. Kinda wish I made a mechinator beforehand so I could go destroy mechs forever route and just make a flying burn box for the rest of the run. It definitely has a lot more content than anything besides maybe biotech, still wish they could have figured out a way for space combat even if it were to be a janky version of boarding each others ships mid flight.

I had similar complaints, things worth trying:
1) You don't have to go all or nothing, you can have separate buildings without giving everybody an individual house, and sometimes it's even useful
Nice temperatures are mandatory for your sleeping quarters, but your dining room and rec areas only need to be mildly climate controlled, and separate buildings lets you expand more gracefully
Personally I find organic building spread offends my autism less than twisting hallways, and if you really want the security you, external walls are a valid solution that can also be aesthetically pleasing
2) If you find yourself always building identical looking structures, you might want to experiment with alternative room designs
I personally have a very generic freezer/kitchen/butcher setup that I overuse, so sometimes I just say fuck it and experiment with a new layout
3) Consider a change of perception - The difference between a commie block and a cozy fortress can be remarkably subtle
Also you might be surprised at how much nicer things feel when you do something as simple as removing the roof on a major hallway (although you may have to tentatively roof it up if a toxic spread starts)

I like Dwarf Fortress, but you're both right/wrong.
Dwarf Fortress is vastly shittier as a game, but it's a lot better as a sandbox simulation. In Dwarf Fortress the only real way to fail is to have purposeful weaknesses built into your fort on a structural level, IE, not having a drawbridge despite that installing one is fucking easy. You can straight up ignore most of the dangers if you're even slightly proactive.
In Rimworld it's possible to get an immortal supercolony too, but it's a lot harder and takes actual effort and gamesense. The difference is, in Rimworld there's a much harder time customizing the experience to your liking in a roleplay sense. Since you have more legitimate shit to worry about, you need to make more legitmate concessions like always building an autism fort in the mountains or on the coast, shit like that.

I got really fucked by one of those since the mysterious stranger event got compounded with Nothing There. NT is a night mare to beat as-is, but but the guy had Death Refusal so every time he died a new NT spawned until I had 5 of the fuckers deleting the colony.

Even my hyper-optimized melee psycaster couldn't do shit against more than one and setting off an orbital strike under his feet only downed one NT. I summoned help from 5 factions then and they all got slaughtered too.

it destroys the tile it takes off from, you can deploy an expensive(5 adv compies) structure to protect a map from this effect, but the idea is that the ship IS your base. it's a little cramped but you can live entirely off of it, jumping from tile to tile(and when you're ready you can eventually live on an asteroid or space station, you do still seems to get raids rarely, all i saw was a "raid" of 3 scythers that got owned instantly, this was on losing is fun difficulty with insane value colonists)

It's half assed. Takes concepts from mods, guts them and implements them half way. Armor racks? No storage configurations, no loadouts, just a fancy place to hold 2 items in one cell. A glorified SHELF.
Space ships? A mobile base without any unique events. No enemy space ships, no friendly space ships, literally nothing new. Just fly away any time a threat spawns. NO orbiting mechanics. NO flying into empty space, it has to be a selected tile with shit on it. Space raids are retarded and suicide after a few days because enemies cant 'walk' off into space when fleeing. So they just afk in your base and dig at wall until they die of malnutrition and cannibalism.Did I mention there are no enemy gravships? They just magically drop pod onto your asteroid base.

For overwhelming melee forces I have two melee fighters who make the attackers chase them for a bit if that's needed. Many aspects of the DLC are better. SoS is designed for living in space (and does that better), Odyssey - for traveling around the globe (and it does that better) with some bonus stuff available in space.

It's just how it works. There is a mod that enables resource generation on camp maps, and also if you buy Odyssey(TM), tiles you land on become your new home rather than camps, and so they do have an abundance of resources - they'd have none if you went there with just caravan..

I don't think tiles respawn ever. So it ewill be unavailable forever if you abandon the camp. As for the settle, I guess this should also spawn resources, but you'd need to abandon your original colony or enable the setting/cheat to have multiple colonies.

You can start with ship already available, but that comes with a quest that makes robots hunt you. Or you can start normally and the grav core just lands in your colony in a few weeks.

Quick save/load after every unwanted outcome takes the challenge/fun out of the whole game. Being ridged in how you play creates a stale experience. Thats just me however. I do fear the bow users.
