>>715673847Even as a kid back when they were new, I never liked Mario 64 or banjo kazooie’s level design. I liked running around the hub world, but that’s about it. As the years went on, I also grew to hate the collectathon style of game, preferring actually designed levels over sandboxes. That’s not me saying crash is the better game, it isn’t, but it’s the better game style. I’d argue crash 3 is the only one coming close to Mario 64, but I also consider 3D world to be the first actually good 3D mario game.
For me, the best N64 games are ocarina of time, majora’s mask, sin & punishment, f zero x, Star Fox 64, smash bros, mischief makers, perfect dark, doom 64, and ogre battle 64.
I say this with a massive 4tb nvme ssd that has complete rom sets of nearly every console(I intentionally removed sports games and ports, then was more selective as game consoles got bigger rom sizes)
I also still play many PS1 games still, mostly the 2D ones as they held up better.
But it’s just a plain fact that with cheaper dev costs and more storage space, a lot of the talent moved over to PlayStation and ignored N64. N64 does have outstanding games, but there are less of them compared to the PS1.
I wish we got to see more devs really showing us what the n64 was capable of, but they just weren’t around for it
